Mud Dauber damage….

Yeah, I've got three of them. The 222 was my first and then I got a 308 and then lucked onto a 7-08 from its introductory year! The 7-08 has a very short barrel.

I have two in 30-30 (one's an AI), a 22-250 (now AI), a 6mm Rem and a 6mm-250 AI that used to be a 22-250. Awesome guns.

I remember reading some of the old writer like Ruark and AAgard who mentioned that at the end of the day or during breaks they would place a round, bullet end in the muzzle th thwart the little buggers. They were apparently very aggressive about setting up housekeeping in any kind of hole.

Here in N.D. I have seen, what we call spotted winged flys, crawl into barrels, can't crawl out backwards and die. Multiple flys do this, plugging the barrel and rust pits are created. Cleaning rod only jams them up worse. Hard to get out, when you do the barrel has bad pitting, usually near chamber and lead.

Years ago Jack Sutton, husband of Michelle Hart, of Hart Rifle Barrels told me mud dauber had been their number one enemy in the storage area. They cold destroy a whole batch of barrels in one afternoon. They ended up having to put caps over all the barrels until being shipped out.

If you have fire extinguishers in your shop, check the nozzles. I found mine plugged the other day when I grabbed it to use as a fire safeguard during a fuel filter change on the hot engine on one of my tractors. Little beggars are everywhere.

Hi Al, how have you been?

I have done that when out hunting in inclement weather. But I never imagined that the muzzle needed protection while
in my garage! My good fortune was that I saw the mud at the end of the muzzle. If Wily Coyote had shown up and I grabbed
the 788, it would not have been a good thing. (for me or the rifle)

A few years ago, while mowing in April, this guy showed up. My house gun was handy!

You, sir, are a very sensible man. At least in my eyes. Imagine using a glove to hold a nasty coyote up!! I've seen guys lift them or hold them up barehanded to take pictures. Or lay their rifle or caller on the coyote!!

I'd shoot it for group & see if it still does what it did previously. I know it's too late now, but the old G.I. "condom over the crown" trick might be a good idea in the future for your garage rifle.
Even if it threw everything low and right now, it would be consistent and fixable with a sight adjustment.

Not recommended, but I’ve knocked them out with baling wire before on rifles carried behind the seat of ranch pickup’s. I’m sure it will still shoot for the next generation.

That barrel looks EXACTLY like a 308 788 i just scrubbed out for a buddy who, well, lets just say he is less than finicky about cleaning it, ever...

it still shoots MOA, but is down from 1/2 MOA ten years ago. I think he let it sit wet.

either way, i am greatly disappointed that it shoots ok....cause i was going to spare you the agony of shooting it since that bug ruined it and just send you the cost of shipping it to me for disposal...;)
