Hawkeye should up (what to look for?)

My Hawkeye came the other day so checked out my .17hmr as the mud dobbers got to it(doesn't look good). I then headed over to a friends to check out a couple of his rifles he was concerned about. In one barrel at the throat there seemed to an area that looked charred ,almost like a dried up mud hole would look with the cracks ? Maybe someone can explain to me what that means and also what I'm looking for in each barrel?

Firecracking is what you are seeing. Normal part of 'getting old'. I use my scope to assess for thoroughness in cleaning ie.- that I have no missed carbon/copper buildup in the bore and that I have no carbon buildup at the end of the chamber and in the freebore. I don't use the scope to determine if a barrel needs to be changed; if it is shooting as well as I need it and I can still seat the bullet at the desired distance relative to the lands I don't care if the entire reach of the borescope is firecracked.

As an owner of a Hawkeye, I had a guy somewhat mentor me, it was a big help. The more you use it, the more you will see and understand. Especially when you start with a new barrel and monitor it's life.
Your friends gun has fire cracking, from heat generated while firing. Most barrels exhibit some of this, the case itself can cause it(overbores), rate of fire etc...

You will build experience by looking at new barrels (factory barrels look really bad, any of the better ones look great), looking at some that have light use, and looking at others that have heavy use. The article I am including has some photos at the end to help you. Just remember that everything is greatly magnified.
