Moving to New Jersey

Hi All,

I'm moving to New Jersey from Ohio and have recently taken up service rifle competition. I would like to continue competition and was looking for advice on taking my AR-15 to Jersey. Am I fooling myself thinking I can get a permit to possess it in New Jersey for competition? Should I just leave it with a rifle club buddy in Ohio and enjoy it there? (I'm keeping my farm in Ohio and plan to be back often) Do I need to add a Garand to the arsenal?

I'm also looking for a club in South Jersey for both service rifle and 3P small bore, any suggestions?

You had better get more info on what you want too shoot in NJ, contact http://www.cumberlandriflemen.com/ for better info on bringing your AR rifle into NJ or you may LOSE IT.
 
First, my condolences. Second, get over to the National Match forum where the only purpose of that forum is for high power discussions and you will get the info you want as there are a bunch of NJ locals on the forum that can give you the correct info.
 
x10 on condolences! NJ cops are not forgiving when it comes to firearms and if you get information from them, you'd better get it in writing.

It is imperative that you contact the local authorities in the jurisdiction where you intend to live in NJ and get their interpretation of the NJ statutes. Repeat, their interpretation, which may not actually agree with the letter of the law - this is a recurring problem in NJ. Then, and only then, working through them, start the ball rolling to meet whatever legal requirements need to be met. And until ALL those requirements have been met, do not bring ANY firearm into NJ other than passing through to another state. And that goes DOUBLE for an AR platform; unless the situation has changed in the last few years, ARs throw the NJ authorities into a feeding frenzy, the legal cost of extricating yourself from which have to be seen to be believed, and which ultimately still may leave you with a criminal record that will cause you problems, including possibly preventing you from owning a firearm. NJ can be a very hostile place for firearms owners moving in from out of state (and on occasion, just passing through), so make sure you have all the i's dotted and tees crossed BEFORE you transport ANY firearm into NJ; do that and you will be OK.

I concur. no amount of pay increase could get me to move there. The trouble with calling the authorties and asking for advise is the first thing they will ask you, what is your name and where will you live. You are now a TARGET. Please be careful in your decisions and god luck.

Firstly, get used to drivers disregarding the "Stay Right, Pass Left" law. >:(
Secondly, learn what a "Beach Whistle" is. ???
Thirdly, You have no idea what taxes are yet! ;)
Don't worry PA isn't that far away and we hand out CCW Permits like candy! ::)

If you do end up making the move, please come over to New Holland in PA and Cumberland in southern Jersey. Both great 600 yard ranges that have monthly matches. As Mudcat said, check out the National Match forum. There are quite a few NJ people there that can steer you in the right direction and will likely keep you out of the graybar hotel.

Moved from FL and lived there for 12 years (for job) and I can only add, if you can live in PA and commute in you'd be better off. NJ gun laws are way out there. :o

dont do it lived in nj for years went back 2 years ago brought my ar,bench gun and 40 cal tried to find a range to shoot was asked what i was wanting to shoot .when i told them (at a outdoors store i used to go to as a kid with my dad) was to to shut up dont bring it in and leave or i will have to be arrested. turns out 20+mags are a big no no in nj . was also asked what ammo i had i just turned and left the place .
 
Note to self: Don't take the motorhome in New Jersey again.

We have been in all of the continental 48 states with the 'wheel estate'. New Jersey is now on the "Don't Visit Again" list.
 
New Jersey (entire state), New York (entire state), Maryland (Baltimore/Washington Area), Boston MA, Illinois (windy City Area), Detroit, Los Angeles, are all location that are not gun friendly and I would never live in any of these locations and make a policy not to visit either.

Had a friend stopped in NJ after duck hunting with his uncle, and the over zelious police arrested him for having two shot guns unliaded in soft cases in rack in the rear window of a pick-up. He was originally charged with a felony, and his guns were taken. He had to post a $5,000.00 bond. He was convicted in the first lower level court and his appeals lasted 4 years and cost him several hundred thousand dollars. His conviction was eventually overturned. His guns were destroyed in the process. He sued the officer, agency(city), and state in Federal Court. He received a judgement against the city for $1.00 and his legal expenses. The US court of appeals in that district is not gun friendly and basically ruled everone was just doing their job and following the existing law as they interpreted it.
My friend now has a special waiver, he has to present every time he fills out a BATF 4473 and does a NICS check.
He has been stopped and strip searched on several trips out of the USA when he returns.
Life is not always fair. You may win the battle but you lose the war at the cost it took you to win. Robert E. Lee is a prime example.

From a shooter in NJ -

This came completely out of left field, it has nothing to do with the legislature, rather it's a police initiative. To allow our Attorney General this power is the WORST thing that could happen for gun owners given his prior record.

Police state anyone??

Got pulled for now, that certainly doesn't mean it's dead. All because one of the female assembly people (the sponsor) has two brothers that are cops, another lame politician.
 
Hmmmmm, now there's me thinking that America is "The land of the FREE and the home of the brave."
As for FREE - I will now rethink that one and get a second opinion!
As for home of the brave - Is that the definition of a gun owner who wants to move to New Jersey?
