Moving a scope back for eye reflief

A close friend of mine asked me recently to take his post-64 model 70 supergrade to my gunsmith to have an inch cut off the back of the stock so he could have a correct eye relief on the scope which can not go back any further with the current ring/base situation. The front objective is almost at the front of the front scope ring.

My question is, should the "reversible front" leupold base get me that inch to save the stock. Or how about an extended ring leupold makes for a front dovetail base? I refuse to let him have that stock adjusted when knowing him, he might sell the gun after a few seasons. I know, he could also look into a different scope, but what he has suites his needs.

If the eyerelif is caused because of his stature he will still experience a problem especially hunting with heavy clothes. I am 5-6. My hunting stocks are 12.5. I Can't tell you how many over 6 foot guys have picked up my hunting rifles when they have a heavy coat on and say, Wow I can see through your scope so easy. When I say your stocks too long ,I hear, no way. Fine keep missing that big buck cause you could not find him in your scope. I see these 14 inch stocks on factory hunting stocks and shake my head. Pride goeth before a fall.

I think the factor holding the scope back were the factory supplied bases. The front ring sits right between the 2 mounting holes. I looked at the only model 70 I own, also a control feed/claw extractor but post 64, and it has the "Rev F/R" leupold bases and it does in fact allow the scope to sit back much farther over and inch in fact.

The leupold extended ring looks like it gives you about another "ring width" of room, which I belive is closer to 1/2" But that's just me going off of pictures, hence why I was asking for real world answers. But again, this bulky base really appears to not only add like 8 ounces (pair), but also puts the dovetail in the center of the front of the action. The extended front base is not only more svelte, but wouod put the dovetail almost over the front of the ejection port

Lots of choices out there. I’m just attaching this link as an example. There are many more to look through. This just happens to be at Walmart which is accessible to everyone. You can Google offset scope rings and find anything you want for very little cost

I dunno man, to each their own. I just cringe at the thought of pretty wood and high gloss blue with what looks like a piece of matte Lego on top

To the OP. I'm posting this link again!!

offset scope rings - Google Search

I can't make it any simpler. All you have to do is click the blue colored link just above this text. If I read the original post right he's looking for off set rings that will set the scope back further and help with eye relief for his friend and not have to cut the stock. Yes adding a rail will give room to move the scope back and work, however for as little as $19 you can get rings that will accomplish the objective he asked about.

I think I will consult with GUFFEY on this matter, I'm sure he should say bump it back, I'm gonna listen to some Nirvana, Man who sawed the stock

It's not a matter of cost but keeping the elegance of the rifle. Though your suggestion was valid for accomplishing the task, adding aluminum picatiny style bases would cheapen up the gun . I ended up spending $50 for reversible leupold bases and new matching rings.

My questions was not a matter of suggestions, but looking for real data of the offset turn-in style rings would provide the necessary 1" and if the reversible bases would work.

I appreciate your thoughts on this subject nonetheless
