Mounting Unertl scope to Remington 40X

I just bought a Remington 40X. It has two .179 high scope mounts on
the barrel and a rear receiver mount that is slightly lower than the two barrel mounts. Can anyone tell me how I should mount the 24X
Unertl scope I have for the rifle? Do I use the two mounts on the barrel that are about 6.3 inches apart c to c or do I use one of the
two mounting points on the rear mount even though it is slightly lower?
The c to c distance from the front mount is about 10.7" and 11.5
depending where it is attached. Any comments on how much adjustment
there would be when mounted at those center distances?

It seems weird that the rifle which appears to have been factory drilled for mounts has such wierd center to center distances and different heights.

Any input would be helpful.

This is how I installed my 36X programmer on a 40X. If that option isn't available to you either of the options you mentioned will work. Unless your barrel has been set back it should be 7.2 inches from the barrel mount to the front receiver ring mount for 1/4 min clicks. Using the rear receiver mount will make it about 1/6 min clicks.
Just noticed you said 2 barrel mounts. All the factory CMP rifles I have seen only had one rear mount on the barrel. Wayne

Mount it on the two on the barrel, all three of my CMP h&r m12 has two on the barrel. That's where I mount the 20x unertl scope works just fine

Those are NOT factory drilled holes. The factory holes were - two at the muzzle for an iron sight (or bubble level), and one pair that was centered 7.2" from the center of the receiver ring pair of holes - that was all that Remington drilled - the others were drilled after the gun was sold.

Those are quite nice looking scope mounts. It looks like the front mount ends up lower than the rear mount. What is the reason for that?

John

If you were referring to my mounts the front is lower than the rear. It gives me enough elevation to get out to 300 yards. Wayne

What Rem6br said. While the spacing you measured (6.3 inches) is not what is considered "standard" (to get exactly the elevation or windage click value, or the value the knobs are marked for on ones old enough to not have clicks, generally required 7.25" on those few Unertl, Fecker and Lyman scopes of that type for which I heve seen instructions. A different spacing is definitely not a deal killer, it simply changes the amount of actual adjustment slightly compared to the "advertised" value.

I moved the rear mount that was on the barrel to the front of the receiver. This gives me a spacing pretty close to 7.35" so I will be close enough to 1/4 minute clicks to make me happy. Now the front base is about .125" lower than te rear mounted on the receiver, I think I have enough adjustment to make that work down to 50 yards or less and will have plenty to get out to at least 200 yards if I ever shoot it that far. I can also always put on a taller front mount to get them closer to the same height.

I think all should be well.

Thanks,

John

Note the attached photo. Low block on the front of the reciever and a higher mount on the barrel. The scope position in the photo is set back (probably shot offhand with it last use on my position gun). But that is where the mounts should be.

Thanks, that is exactly what I ended up doing. Need to get a higher front mount and I will be all set.

What is the rear reciever mount for?

John

John,
I could be for rear sights although I have only seen ones that attach to the side mount. But I haven't seen a lot of things ;D
