Mountain lion too close!

A cougar kill in front of my house last year. It happened at night with absolutely no sound, but in looking it over it was easy to tell from the tracks how the cougar had pounced on the deer from behind, the deer then ran into a woven wire fence hard enough that it bowed the fence about a foot from the impact and within about 20 feet from the fence the deer was down. I was surprised at how much blood there was on the ground in the 20 or so feet distance from where the deer had hit the fence and was down, the whole kill encompassed less than a 50 feet from the time the cougar pounced until the deer was down.
The top picture shows how close it was to the house - the deer is laying in the bottom right just above the date stamp.

drover;
I am surprised that the cougar didn’t drag the kill off to hid it for a latter meal. Maybe something scared it, and it left the remains. Would like to know if you had the remains removed or buried.

I'm a bit surprised a big cat left it there, and didn't carry it off to cache it. Did you find any cat tracks?

PS I just now discovered PRR1957's similar comment.

This story I got from the man himself, my cousin, but nevertheless it's second-hand:

My first cousin is an avid archer, has won many 3D tournaments around the country, and bowhunts in his home ground, the Clearwater region of north-central Idaho. He's also an excellent taxidermist and well-known flyfisherman.

Once while bowhunting elk, alone, near Clarkia, Idaho, seated in understory wearing camo and calling patiently, a cougar approached him. Then it became apparent the cat was preparing to pounce, so he drew his bow. The cat then did pounce and my cousin put an arrow in it in midair, killing it.

Nobody witnessed it, but I know my cousin and have no doubt it's a true story.

I know a couple of guys that have had near misses with mountain lions while calling coyotes. The ML snuck up behind them while they were calling. One guy had his hat knocked off when the cat swiped at him! He was using a mouth call.

Definitely cougar, lots of tracks and if you look at the pattern of how the deer had been eaten this is typical of the initital feeding of cougars. I not did see the cougar so any guess as to size would be that - a guess.
As far as not covering it - there is nothing to cover it with anywhere nearby and the nearest place to drag it to any cover would have been some sagebrush a couple of hundred yards away.

I did smudge the tracks after studying them and there were more cougar tracks on the second night and it had been fed again. Nights 3 and 4 the coyotes worked on the remains and by day 5 it was down to the skull and some scattered bones, I did find a few pieces of leg with some hide on them that had been carried further off by the coyotes.

Do you hunt by yourselves or do you have a guide?

Up here in Flagstaff. I live next to the FS.

I learned what caterwauling is this summer. I was sleeping outside up at my barn in an easy chair when I woke up about 2am to what sounded like a child or women being horribly tortured or murdered, seriously that's the best way to describe that awefull sound! I almost called the sheriff.

This went on for about a week so I slept indoors.

Told a friend about it and he knew exactly what it was, a lion. Then we looked it up on youtube, yep sure enough - "caterwauling".

Friend of friend saw a cat headed across our road a week later.

Last year only 250 yards back off our property I saw some buzzards, turned out there was a elk kill. I thought maybe it was hit by a car and traveled that far but after looking back it probably wasn't that.

Funny how the game people keep saying that there are none here in Ct. but guys who spend a lot of time in the woods keep seeing them.
Some even have pictures from game cameras but nope " must be a bob cat", saw photos a few years ago of one walking through the yards of maybe 6 different house on the same street and they would have to be legally blind not to see it is a lion, but no they still deny it.
I said to a game warden once after seeing one at a distance that if there are not any then I can shoot one with out getting arrested and the look I got told me the answer with out being answered.

I am in Custer county - central Idaho. There are lots of cougar here, generally they are not too much of an issue although sometimes one will take a calf or young heifer.

BenPerfected - I do not hunt them. There are some outfitters around here though that do.

Tonight, on Fox news, on the continually running banner under the usual political drivel, I saw that a "bob cat" attacked an elderly couple (70-80 YO) in a suburb of Ft. Lauderdale Florida. The news item went on to say the old folks were hospitalized and the creature jumped out of a tree to attack the elderly humans. The news item ended with a notation that bobcats lived in urban settings without detection. I think the old humans were too close the cat's home den but might have taken the opportunity for a quick meal - dine & dash?

Cats are extremely intelligent and able to adapt to changing situations. My best cat, a fixed and retired orange tom cat with expressive amber knowing eyes had a weight problem. Our veterinarian suggested hiding his food in different spots in the house so the cat could have to use is innate hunting instincts to find dinner. I thought this was excessive so I built a stepped nice perch for him out of 2X2's and carpet covered plywood to enable him to share meals with us - we had him for 18 years until I permitted the veterinarian to execute him. During his time on the planet he continually amazed me with his intelligence and perception. This overweight elderly cat, when sleeping would turn his ear when a fly buzzed into the room.

My guess is that the cat who successfully preyed on the deer did not hang around after the deer slammed into the fence but remained long enough to open up the deer and get some of the tasty stuff inside of the deer's stomach for immediate nutrition - I think I see part of an intact liver and the neck appears to be broken.

A collection of great photos !!!!

So I pulled up to the garage, just about to get my 1 year old out of the truck, when a full size male mountain lion comes out about 5 yards away! I closed my son in the truck and ran towards him and he took off. I also noticed hes been spraying around my porch. Funny thing is I lion hunt here all the time and nothing lol. Wish I had my phone on me! I’ll post a pic of where he was. So where my truck is parked he came down that hill kind of straight and to the right.
Can you hunt with dogs there ?

While deer hunting a few years ago I was sitting on a rock glassing a canyon at daylight, after about a half hour I got up to stretch turned around and there was a lion at my back. No way to get to my rifle so all I could do is stare him down,I go just what the hell you got in mind and took a step for him, then he took one towards me so I do it again ,his next step he took he turned and at that time I new I had called his bluff (thank God). We were 22 steps apart at that time measuring with my boots toe to heel . All I had was my hunting knife during the confrontation.
