most effective muzzle break?

Which break/type of break reduces felt recoil the most?

Not going to be shooting prone or with others beside me.

The only brake that I have is a SSS brake. They are not the cheapest, but it was installed when I bought the barrel, and all in all it was a smokin' deal. The brake works great!! It is on a 22br (which probably doesn't need a brake to start with) and the recoil is almost non-existent (probably about like a 22 hornet, maybe less). There is not a problem with muzzle jump or moving drastically on the rest after firing etc.... You can see your shots easily. Here is his link with prices --

The JP howitzer brake from EABCO is supposed to be very good from the reviews I have read. I am going to put one on my next build and see what it does, though a 9+lb 6BR probably won't really require it. It just looks sweet anyway.

I would rate the Holland Quick Discharge brake as the most effective one I've tried. Pain Killer is also good. Gentry and Vais are right behind. I like the Vais personally. Also, it appears to me that boomers get a higher percentage of recoil reduction than small calibers. I have read that the huge volume of combustion gas is what makes the difference. Makes sense to me.

'Fat Bastard' from American Precision Arms, makes a 338LM feel like a 260! And that was the small brake, the big one works even better.

I have a Holland Quick Discharge brake on a 243 AI and it does wonders for recoil. After a days worth of PD shooting maybe 300rds you will appreciate it. It is very noisy however at the range under any cover. When I move outside its no so bad.

I have been shooting with brakes for about 20 years now. The best brake I have ever shoot is the "Fat Bastard" by APA..PERIOD! While all brakes are not "neighbor" friendly with the FB I get no feeling of the pressure wave as a shooter. Considering all the brakes that I have shot so far, I would rather pay for a FB than get somebody else's brake for free.

Harrels makes a brake as good as any out there, the price is a big plus....

Vias or defensive edge gets my vote. Both are 2x as effective as the jp howitzer. Go with the DE.

That's funny, all the reviews I have read say the exact opposite about the JP howitzer. Nearly all I have seen on it says it is very effective.

I would go with a Harrell's over a Vias, nearly the same design for a lot less money.

The harles is pretty darn good. I have a OPS inc on my 300WM and it is a pussy cat. On my 338LM I have an Armalite break on it. I have a standard AR-30 with the stock cut down. The recoil pad is just a sheet of Aluminum. I do not know what caliber you need but they make them in 30 cal also.

The Harrells has a lot going for it; plenty of satisfied customers and a great price.

The Hollands has a goo rep also but is higher priced- is it worth the extra money?

The Fat Bastard gets great reviews but is pretty pricey. If it's worth the money I have no problem buying it, jut dont want to pay 300% more for 5% more effeciveness.

Then you're referring to the little bastard. The fat bastard will make a .338 lapua feel less than a .260 IMO. I'll see if I can find the video of the little girl shooting a .338 Lapua with the fat bastard brake. The rifle looked like it moved less than an AR15.

Here's a pic of the little girl. You'll have to trust me that even though the stock doesn't fit her, she wasn't scared at all, actually smiled after the shot and wanted to do it again. She was 5 or 6 in that picture.

The fat bastard is the real deal. Lutz Moeller has also found the side discharge muzzle brakes to be the most effective.

Go with a little bastard from APA. If you ever want to shoot off the ground you won't blow stuff up from the bottom. They vent out the side and make high quality stuff.
