Most Effecient Way to Sort Projectials?

Last year I did not sort any of my bullets for matches. I figured that if I were shooting Match Kings it would be a waste of time. I met a shooter at Tullahoma last year that sorts all of his Match Kings and he told me that he would find 3 or 4 out of every 500 that were bad. Those 3 or 4 bad bullets could cause you to leak a 8 or 9 and ruin a good score.

Sorting by weight and base to ojive, how do you do it?
What parameters do you use?
What tools do you use?
Please be as specific as possible, I swore that I would never do this but, what the heck, it's worth a try.

Chuck,

The problem you have with bullets like Sierra is they have three production lines running at the same time. That means different dies etc. All three lines dump the finished product into the same bin so you could have three slightly different runs in the same box.

I use a pair of the Stoney Point Chamber-All Bullet Comparators, page 38 Sinclair catalog)for sorting.

I first weigh check on the new Denver Instruments MXX-123 which is a snap if you check for weight compared to using a balance beam.

I then put two SPC,Stoney Point Comparators) on my caliper one on each jaw facing each other. This is to check bearing length.
Sort them all this way first.

Remove the one from the outer jaw and check for base to ogive measurement sorting all bullets again this way.

Then I trim the Meplats on those I select for 500+ yards.

I bought a couple of the Plano lure boxes at Wal Mart with the compartments and use sticky dots to mark each chamber and as I sort drop them into their respective compartments.

I'll use the two ends of the extreme for practice and foulers and keep the consistant middle grouping for the real deal.

I don't know if it makes jack s**t of difference at the short yardages, but I'll take every little advantage I can get at the longer yardages.

Danny -- i think all the SMK's are single machine runs now...call them and confirm.

I usu sort by bearing surface with 2 stony point comparator tools on my calipers: http://www.6mmbr.com/catalog/item/1433308/977259.htm

The last lot of 142 SMK's i had were AMAZINGLY consistant!

Going to try some other methods this year...

I like to sort by brand. Find a good bullet maker that makes good bullets on one die. The key is a single die for all the bullets in your box. Sierra has many dies that all feed the same bin. The bin is then used to fill your box. Your box then has bullets from various dies that are all close, but no two dies are exactly the same.

The key is to sort out your suppliers so that you no longer have to sort bullets.
