Mossberg 144LSB questions

I bought this gun when it was new and have put very few shots down the tube. I have the original "peep" sight system on it and I am not happy with the accuracy.
What should I be doing to this gun to improve/bring it back to life?
I can out-shoot my friend with his 10-22, but I think it should group tighter.

Have you tried different .22 LR ammunition in your rifle? I found in mine that certain .22 LR ammunition shot better that others. In mine the old CCI Mini Group ammunition shot exceptionally well,in fact, I still have about 500 to 600 rounds left!)

Ya! I have tried everything from some ancient Peters, some Western, CCI premium and now some Wolf match. The Wolf works the best, but still no tight groups.

My 144LSB shoots 1/2" to 5/8" 5 shot groups at 50 yards off a rest. I think that's about the best it will do "stock and unmodified". I have been reading a lot about accuracy lately and for now i'm thing the throat/leade area has a lot to do with a rifle "throwing a shot".

Be sure the throat/leade and the first 2" of the bbl is squeaky clean. Just a little lead fowling or build up with decrease accuracy a lot. Use a new brass brush and scrubb the first couple inches of the bbl really good. You hear don't use a brass brush but in my experience and a lot of reading the forums a brass brush is ok use.

What kind of groups are you getting and good luck! joe:thumb:

I think I'll get a box of better ammo. But, the Wolf match is supposed to be good.

I will be going to the range this week to try again. I cleaned up the aperture in the rear sight, I found a spot of rust that was causing a bit of distortion. Plus, I'll put the scope on it and try that again.

I will also make sure there is no lead fouling .

Has anyone tried to make the barrel fully floating? It wouldn't be difficult with this gun.

I might add i did use a scope and the same Wolf MT you tried. The Wolf MT shoots really good in my 10/22 rugers and several other rimfires i have. SK Match did shoot a little better in my Kimber 82G. My Rugers did not like the SK match, go figure.

It would be interesting if anyone has tried free floating a 144LSB. thanks joe
