More praise for Eric Bostrom

All,

I will be getting my .308 F/TR barrel back from Eric today. I sent it to him because of the service I received on my Krieger 30BR. The Krieger shot reasonably well, but I was shooting 250-11x and taking 8th place. Most of the rest of the shooters were using a barrel tuner of one type or another. Not sure how I heard of Eric as I think about it. Turn around was fast and the results, IMO, fantastic.

This puts "load" testing in a whole new light. Rather than fiddle with .3 gr increments on powder and trying to correlate chronies with plots, I just used a chrony to achieve a desired MV, then removed the chrony and used Eric's excellent instructions to shoot the tightest group. My ES averages around 10 or less and I was amazed at the spread change as I incremented the tuner. Turns out the original setting was the best and that's pure coincidence because there is no recommended initial setting.

I was a little worried about whether the tuner would hold it's position because it does not have a positive locking device beyond a rubber o-ring for friction. But it didn't move a whit.

I did the tuning with my Magnetospeed V2 attached. If my ammo was not giving me a good ES, I wanted to know it. The first group was good. Subsequent groups were all worse than the initial setting and all worse by about the same amount. Then I went back to the original setting it tightened right back up to equal with the first group.

I was worried that when I removed the Magnetospeed it would throw everything off. Not true. The attached target (5 rounds) was the last target w/o the chrony and at the original setting.

Of course the tuner setting may require adjustment given weather, temperature, different load, bullet, etc. I think as long as I can get to the range the day before a competition I should be golden. In fact, I think I could use a warm-up match to do the tuning on range day.

Getting back to Eric, I suspect he calls every customer and gets to know them. He's honest and makes sure you're provided with all possible instruction and support.

excellent. I have talked to Eric and he is very helpful and prices are reasonable. I was thinking about getting a tuner put on my Savage but have not decided yet

what is that group? Low 2s?

Not sure what you means by low 2's. Better than 1/4 MOA. I was shooting for groups. All rounds were fired center/center and in almost no wind.

I suppose that's about right. I only have a yard stick with 1/8" on it. It's between 1/8" and 1/4" so yes, probably .2

Try this: http://www.ontargetshooting.com/ removes a lot of guess work.

It doesn't I test for minimum ES just to know variations are not from too large an ES. Tuner is purely for harmonics.

I just got my barrel back for the .308 F/TR rifle and it's all back together.

I'm not sure which order these pics will appear. One shows the o-ring that keeps the tuner from turning without the shooter being involved. One thing I will add to the non-moveable portion of the tuner is an index mark. The moveable portion has index marks. Then one pic from a bit farther away.

I can't wait to get out and do some testing. I'll be testing with Lapua brass, Berger 185gr Juggernaut Target and 43.7gr of VV-140.

Is that thing legal? Not trying to be a smart ***. I'm actually really interested.

You could always check the regs since they are readily available. But yes, it's legal. There's nothing in the rules that would disqualify a tuner.

Barrel tuners are legal for both High Power and Benchrest competition. Muzzle breaks are not legal for High Power. They are legal in Benchrest for light gun and heavy gun as long as the blast is sideways only, not to the rear. Light and Heavy Varmint may not use muzzle brakes.
