Montour County Rifles Meplat Trimmer - Anyone using it?

I use one for 6mm bullets then point them. Haven't shot any with just trimming. I have run some side by side tests with trimmed and pointed vs not and I get .6" better grouping at 600yds on average with trimming and pointing.

Anything that makes your bullets more consistent is a plus (just need the time to do it).

Pros: it's probably the most consistent of the meplat trimming tools, the deburring tool helps with consistency.

Cons: it is slower then the rest, as it is purely hand driven and uses 2 operations 2 finish a bullet.

Personally i have 2 Girauds and one is mostly set up to trim my bullets, makes the experience faster and more enjoyable. Without noticing any difference really, but i am sure there are better shooters then me too, and I don't shoot much from a bench.

Trimming and tipping the bullets there after have given me better consistency on target at longer ranges though.

Trimming and pointing in a 30 cal can be a very small increase in BC. On the other hand, it can (but doesn't always) improve the BC variation from one projectile to the next.

Before I spent money, if I had it to do again, I would look at what I have with out of the box bullets. The big question is this: Do I see the need for improvement, and what amount of improvement am I likely to get?

For example, if you have the velocity ES pinned down, and are still getting a little too much vertical at 1K (say you get 3/4 MOA) that cannot be attributed to rifle, bipod, etc., I would have a friend trim and point 50 or so for testing.

I would then shoot a 20 shot string with 10 pointed and 10 unpointed at 1k to determine what change in elevation occurs (related to BC change) and what, if any, reduction in vertical is obtained. Continue testing with the remaining pointed bullets to compare absolute results.

If the results of testing show that there is a gain that you need, go ahead and drop the 3-4 hundred to setup for the process.

BTW, I do point 7mm 180 hybrids, I stopped pointing the 6mm VLD's after testing, I don't bother with the 155.5 fullbore anymore, I haven't tested the 185 Jugg yet, and I do point the 200 Hybrid. I used to point the 215 hybrid, but stopped because I couldn't shoot them anyway...

bd,

Sorted them by OGL yet? The lots I've measured over the past two years sorted into two groups with the high/low groups differing by 0.006 between groups with groups differing by +/- 0.002. After sorting then trimming, bullet OAL went from +/- 0.010 to +/- 0.002 within groups. I had some left overs which didn't fit in any group.

While trimming will definitely improve vertical, pointing after may or may not do the same. It will improve BC.

Thanks to all.

I'm aware of meplat trimming and pointing effects on BC.
I already own a Sinclair meplat trimmer but I wonder if the Montour deburring tool would have some effect on target or aesthetic only.

My goal is zeroing verticals at 600 yds and my current ES is around 6 fps.
For 600 yds I don't care of BC decreasing without pointing.
