Montana 1999 Long Action Bedding?

I got the stock last night. The barreled action dropped in nicely, bottom metal fit good too. The M1999 screws for the bottom metal are too short. Initial online search for screws has me thinking this could be a little bit of a challenge. I'm going to see if Fastenal deals with retail customers, I doubt the local Ace store is going to have anything that works, and I'd rather not mess with the inletting if I don't have to. If push comes to shove I'll buy longer screws and cut them.Suggestions are welcome.

What thread pitch are the action screws? Hopefully, MRC didn't duplicate the Model 70's 1/4-32 size. Are they tapered head? Allen or slot? If you post a pic of the originals that will be helpful. -Al

You can try a common 1/4-28 (1/4" NF thread) nut on the screws and see if it threads on. Most tap and die sets have thread pitch gauges with them. 1/4-28 is the size used on Rem 700's, etc. if you've got one of those around to try.

It's not 1/4-28, he has that, and I double checked with a Remington screw which doesn't fit. He doesn't have anything that fits the screws I have. I emailed Montana Rifle, they might know what was used in the older models.

By eyeballing, they appear to be 1/4-32's...which is the same as factory Model 70 screws. Midwest Gunworks, NECG and Forster, etc. offer longer than factory Model 70 guard screws that you can shorten to fit.

PS: Let me know how much length you need them and I'll see what I have.

Thank you for your time! With the barreled action taped tightly into the stock I dropped a 4" nail in through the holes in the bottom metal until it bottomed and came up with ~ 1 3/4" for the rear screw and ~ 1 1/2" for the front, bottomed. I'm not sure how to calculate the exact length but I would need 6 threads to firmly secure it.

I'm now certain they are 1/4x32.

I have made many action screws from these blanks. They used to come with a lot more than 20.

You can insert them from the back side of a 5C Collet most of the time, Depending on Collet mfg.

Thanks. Unfortunately I'm not setup to make my own screws. You have me thinking though I'll talk with a buddy of mine in MA if I strikeout.
