Moly or Nitride rimfire barrel in bench rest

Sorry but I'm confused as to what your asking..? Bore coating or exterior coating for appearance or weather resistance?

My best barrel ever was melonited and couldnt win a turkey shoot against muzzleloaders afterwards. Every one i ever seen done besides yours turned into junk
Sir, you have seen very few then. The only ones that I've seen having a problem was people didn't know that you had to soak them in water for 24hrs or so to eliminate the salts and then a a thorough cleaning with your JB Paste.
A casehardening process , Melonite, at the temps used has no bearing on the metal of the barrel. I posted an email that I received from the armorer of the US Army Accuracy team that did multiple blind test on treated barrels. I believe all of their competition barrels are melonite treated now.
Not saying you didn't have a bad day at the turkey shoot.

Ive seen a bunch i assure you. I think @BartsBullets was even a victim once
Oh Yeah! It turned a great barrel into a total piece of junk. I’m staring at it right now. Won a grand at the SS with it. Screwed it off and gave it to Joel Kendrick (so) after the match to have it “immortalized”. When I got it back you couldn’t hit a pie plate with it.

Several of us gave him a barrel and not a single one of them ever shot again.

Kind of made me loose my desire to have a melonited barrel.

Not my experience and Joel did mine. Maybe, just maybe, you might remember the Super Shoot several years ago I shot that barrel with your bullets for a 3rd place finish in a yardage.
Bart, sorry you had a bad experience.

I do! And that was some outstanding shooting!

I’m not saying that it can’t work. But every barrel in that batch was ruined. I was convinced it would work or I would have handed mine over to get done.

I personally have no experience with melonited barrels. If I remember correctly I believe Stiller has tried it and wasn’t pleased as over time the bore seamed to appear to have micro pitting and never shot to his standards.
Im not against trying a coated barrel.

It is not a coating, it is a form of case hardening. Stiller and Bat use the process on bolts and maybe receivers.

Hey Chris, you are absolutely correct. Jerry did have a barrel Melonited and there were issues with the bore. I do know some centerfire guys that had the same done in the past and had no issues though. Personally I see no need to try, as there seems to be a difference between it working, or not.

Well In the highpower/cmp world melonite/ nitriding seems to work great. A lot of the Texas shooters use it and well, they pretty much run over everyone else.
I think people that have problems neglects to first properly clean the barrel and two
Maybe some vendors process is not suited for barrels but works fine for other parts

FYI I’m have two barrels out being melonited right now
One a 338 win mag for a hunting rifle and the other lol
A used 22lr 40x barrel I cut down to 16” and fluted for a norinco jw15 which is a copy of a cz. Believe it or not the norinco /40x shot really well.
Both barrels are being melonited for weather resistance as the primary reason, I ll let y’all know the results when I get them back and installed

Well, for your information, I can tell you this. I run two premium cleaning rods that the maker has melonited and they will rust. One of them did after a rainy high humidity match and after wiping it down and putting it into it's rod locker, the rod was rusted the top third from the end next time I pulled it out to use it. The rod/rods are made from spring steel and the melonite did nothing to prevent rust. Perhaps 416R stainless, which is the common alloy used for actions and barrels, which will also rust, might gain a benefit from melonite. IDK, but melonite is not a coating, as had already been discussed here, and IME offers little to no protection from the elements as far as corrosion is concerned. YMMV......best of luck.

Then you got a bad batch/ maybe not even at all
My experience with it is on gun parts and hydraulic rams none of which have rusted.
Glocks “ tenifer” that’s melonite
My issue sidearm doesn’t rust.
Most new hydraulic rams on tractors and smaller equipment , they look black or dull gray, they’re melonited. Melonite is actually more durable than the chrome plating on hydraulic rams as it never chips, no rust pits to pick up trash and blow out seals
My tractors loader is coming up on 20 years old, other than the color fading, the rams look great with no pits. That’s with it stored in Louisiana humidity in a sea can all year long
