Moly Coating Bullets. Pro's & Con's

I'm considering moly coating bullets and wanted to ask for opinions. Does moly coating make a difference in accuracy? Barrel life? Is it easier harder to clean? Are there any special cleaning techniques? Any trick I should know or be aware of.

I shoot a .260 for F-class and a .308 for hunter BR.

Moly won't increase accuracy, what it will do is hold accuracy longer in between cleanings.
I feel it also makes a barrel last longer.
I don't really do anything special in cleaning except I don't use any abrasives in my bores to strip the moly out I just clean as usual. I have a 22 Dasher with over 1400 rnds down it and it still shoots sub 2" groups. Moly will also keep a barrel cooler due to less friction in the bore.
Downside is it is a bit messy until you learn a way to coat them efficiently.

I'm a firm believer in the stuff and will keep using it in my varmint and match rifles.

If you want to know what NOT to use to remove moly from your barrel, just put some of your ammonia-based bore cleaner on a rag and wipe one of your moly bullets with it.

After noting the effectiveness of ammonia in removing moly, I dumped 100 moly coated bullets into a sock,to absorb the residue), put the sock in my vibrating tumbler, poured in enough household ammonia to cover the sock, and ran the tumbler for 10 minutes. This removed basically all the moly. I next rinsed the bullets in clean water and placed them back in the tumbler bare,without the sock), covered with ammonia again and tumbled for 5 minutes and followed with a clean water rinse. Not one trace of moly was left, just a nice, clean copper exterior.

NB: The vibrating ammonia will splash outside your tumbler...I place a rag over the top to absorb.

I have followed the moly battle as it has raged for years and never thought much about moly, one way or another...I was using naked bullets and getting all the accuracy I needed. Minute of coyote and a max of around six or seven rounds per outing. I am now using Moly with my 6XC,already applied to the 115DTAC bullets) and have had excellent results with it. Sixty round F class matches, plus sighters, without cleaning AND without a loss of accuracy is a BIG plus. This brings the argument back to application... My opinion... If I were a match shooter firing lots or rounds in a day with no chance to clean up. I would probably even moly my rest, and shooting mat.

Alright,alright... Do you have to increase neck tension when you cross over to the dark side? Will molly let you run faster with less pressure. Say you are pushing a 115 at 3000 with a few signs of pressure, switch to MRS.Molly and the signs disappear do to less resistance.


I love it every time this subject comes up, Some people think molly will be the next cure for cancer others will tell you how it ruined their lives.


Do many point-blank or pod-people use it?

I had never used moly before purchasing a T2K rifle chambered for 6XC. D. Tubb says that you cannot reach the velocity levels he uses without moly. Too many pressure signs. My load of 38.5/H4350 and the 115DTAC bullet is 2890fps. I also have a .030" bullet jump. Well below his advertised load. I stopped there because the accuracy was best at that level. My Barnes loading manual lists a significant velocity increase when using their coated bullets over their "naked" bullets. The Barnes manual is the only source that I have available that actually lists, in print, both coated and naked bullets. 200fps difference in some cases. Carl L.

Most bench rest shooters stopped using moly and I have never thought it was a bad idea to follow their advice.BUT I still use moly in Hart barreld 22 PPC WITH OVER 1000 rounds of moly bullets down the barrel with no accuracy loss and I clean with UPS bore paste every 100 rounds and just wipe it out with SHOOTERS AND KROIL after every shooting session. My new rifle will eat naked bullets only as I feel no need to bother with moly with the amount of shooting I do in one session.

Over the years I've tried moly in a variety of rifles, both factory and custom barrels.

What I've noted is that factory barrels seem to get the most benefit from the use of moly coated bullets. What I have noticed also is that some of those factory barrels displayed a marked improvement in consistancy with the use of moly and a couple of those displayed a marked increase in accuracy.

Custom barrels are a whole nother ballgame. I've had one barrel that I refused to use moly in because it shot so well I wasn't taking any chances on upsetting the applecart. A couple of other custom barrels didn't care one way or the other whether they were fed moly or not.

But each rifle responded differently when moly was used. I'm thinking that perhaps there is soemthing being overlooked in the whole moly debate. The barrels that didn't really care if they were fed moly or not were chambered with custom ordered reamers that I bought so they were in perfect condition when the chamberes were cut, the leades were perfect and the chambers dead in line with the bore. Looking at the factory chambers, well lets just say they could have stood a LOT of improvement, a couple just looked like crap with the chamber cut off center slightly as seem with a borescope where the leades to each land weren't the same length. Those rifles seemed to receive the most benefit.

My theory is that the moly makes the most difference in initial engagement with the leade and lands allowing the bullet to engrave a little bit more easily lessening upset.

Another thing, I haven't noted much in the way of velocity differences when using moly. I don't load too hot though and it might be more apparent with maximum loads but I go fro ES and accuracy.

some custom barrel guys tell you flat out to avoid it like the plague...but ...I have one custom cut chamber in a newer 22 bore I just might try some moly coated bullets with..You guys have peeked my curiosity factor...never takes much to do that ..Now I just need to find the time to do the experiments..
