Moly Bullets Still In Strong Use?

My father and I have used the moly product from NECO for coating custom and factory bullets for the last 12+ years. We shoot cartridges from .172 cal. to .338 cal. with ZERO issues. Our barrels, throats and chambers have remained in excellent condition as evidenced by a bore scope. Our cleaning frequency and cleaning time are greatly reduced. And copper fouling challenges are avoided as well.

As a result, we are huge proponents.

Moly works great. Been using it for years for XTC shooting as well as 1K. no problems with my barrel or anything else. Tried HBN as well and it worked fine. I just decided to stick with Moly. If it isn't broke why fix it?

It is reported ( in various articles on this site) that Moly builds up on itself, holds moisture, and is hard to remove. Whether this is true, I do not know....

I have used Danzac in a Savage .223 for years. When I cleaned the bbl last fall, after removing copper and carbon, I found a layer of rust at the bottom. Took a lot of JB to get it clean. Yep, it does attract moisture. I regularly clean the bbl every 50 or so rounds.

moly and danzac are NOT the same.

Searcher,

Did the gunsmith say why he did not like moly? Was there something that he saw happening that might have been a problem?

Thank you!

Andy

Andy,
I had a well known gunsmith scold me about using moly several years ago. At the time I did not have a borescope but he showed me why with his scope. There were little islands of moly dispersed through out the bore. This was a factory bore but it was a pristine Sako Vixen in .223. Were they harmful? Not likely but I have since not used moly in custom barrels. Why?
1) The first thing I do when I receive a custom barrel is clean it of any oils and examine with a borescope. A lapped custom barrel is a work of precision when viewed with a borescope. I do not want to put anything in the bore that the barrel maker would not recommend. To my knowledge, none of the custom barrel makers recommend moly.
2) Don Genter, who makes custom bullets, is against using moly. He has done some research in the area.
3) I ran this question by a well known name brand bullet maker everyone is familiar with. The tech. told me that even though his company sold moly coated bullets, none of the fellow tech/shooters use it.

I have no problem running it in a factory bore but not a custom one.

i'll put lapua up against your gunsmith.
that company PUBLISHED DATA on a very comprehesive test they did. the bottom line..they SELL moly ammo and bullets.

So I get a new Sinclair catalog sent to me (and I can hear the money leaving my pocket as I turn the pages...) and I notice that they do not list moly coated Sierra Blitz Kings for sale. I then notice that Hornady might have been the only bullet company that was listed in the catalog as having moly bullets. Are moly BK still available?? I do not coat my own, so I like to buy them pre-coated.

Thank you!

Andy
