Model 700 Action

In using a model 700 action for a build does it matter which donor it comes from? IE: BDL, ADL, CDL, SPS etc.
Is there a benefit to any version?

Single shot action would be stiffer, no difference in BDL vs ADL, they are the same, only difference is bolt face and lenght

it doesnt matter what stock it comes from but there are short actions, long actions, repeaters and single shots. mostly repeaters. the frame rails are different on some depending on the original cartridge they were built for. like say on a magnum bolt face model versus a 30/06 model, but they fit in the same stocks.

Those bought Action Only have better fit and finish. but for pure function, not much difference. Some prefer old ones, some new ones. I like the new RR sn actions as generally more true out of the box. some don't like the etched coded serial number.

I did not know this
Neither did I or apparently my gunsmith till I spent over a grand getting an action trued and a barrel chambered and then six months trying to get it to feed 257 Rob shells out of a rem BDL set up. Like to have never figured it out. Ended up putting a solid floor plate in it and making a prairie dog single shot rig out of it... John

Glad you had to pay for that experience and not me! Lol
I have one set back and would've learned the hard way if I had not stumbled across this!!!

DBM actions do not have feed rails. They are built into the magazine, so they are way too wide
Wait. The two rails in a 700 action [where the bolt locking lug has a cut out for the one on the right side] are feed rails?
I'm ROFL - I thought they were to guide the bolt.

Hmm. Thanks.
They look the same to me except the top one appears to have a piece cut out of the top of the receiver.
The one on the bottom looks like the rail is more worn than the one in the top of the picture.

So, the flanges that come off of each side of the inside of the receiver [where rounds are feed through] are not feed rails?

Remington is not the only one that can throw you a curve ball, pre64 mod 70s are cartridge specific. The feed rails were hand filed for a specific cartridge contour, for instance, if you rebarrel a mod 70 that was sent out as an 06 and try to make a 257 Rob or a 284 it won't feed right, you end up making it into a 25-06 and it feeds perfectly. There used to be smiths who would build up the rails and recontour them, but real mod 70 purists can look at a bare action and tell you what cartridge family the action was built for.... John

That piece cut out of the top is for a stripper clip. The feed rails are what hold the rounds down. The space between them is what sets the height the rounds stick up for the bolt to grab them

So, in the bottom pic, is that a feed rail that looks worn? And, the locking lug has a cut out that rides on it?
