Model 70 cocking

I don't work on very many Winchester Model 70"s but I had one in the shop recently for some trigger work. It appeared to be one of the models produced just before closing their operation. It appeared to me that something like 80% of the firing pin cocking was done on closing. Took a bit of effort to close the bolt. Is this the way they were made?

No. Sounds like someone "tuned" or "fixed" it to unserviceability. OR...the cocking stem is broken off of the cocking piece. Not an uncommon thing to happen with M70's. Pictures of the cocking stem please.

I ran into a late model Super Grade that way several weeks ago and it was like new in the box -- no one had worked on it. Also it was near impossible to work the safety on it.

When M70's cock on closing the tab circled is most likely broken off. Weak point in the design.
