model 7 difference

There are actually 2 model 7's. The "Old" one has only 1 (one) screw pilot hole at the rear of the action (for scope mounts) and the "new" one has 2, like a "normal" short action. I have seen the new ones and they appear (not sure) to be a tad bit longer than the old ones too...

The model 7 is shorter than the short action 700. They require there own stock and bottom metal. They are great for youth guns or lightweight mountain rifles. They have a shorter bolt stroke too. Any gunsmith who works on 700s can work on a model 7. Accuracy and whatnot are the same. Downside is model 7 has much less aftermarket parts. And may be limited on COAL and AI type modifications. Model sevens come to standard 308, 22-250 and SAUM sizes.

Due to the fact that Model 7 actions are shorter than Short action model 700s, longer mag boxes are not possible.
There are several variables between the early model 7s and the current model 7s.

Model Seven rear receiver scope mount hole configuration-
Serial number #762800 on S/S actions & #773800 on blued actions & above have 2each #6-48 tpi tapped holes to allow 2 piece scope bases.
Serial numbered receivers before above listed numbers have 1 each #6-48 tpi tapped hole for 1 piece Seven or 700 S/A scope bases.

Early Seven trigger guard/floorplates differ from current production Seven trigger guard/floorplates.

Action geometry has not changed other than above mentioned tapped hole(s).

Basic trigger groups/housings are interchangeable between Seven's & 700's/40X's.
The bolt release levers & bolt stops of Seven's differ from 700/40X's.

Bolt stops & springs are coil type(aka 721/722)vintage using a 3rd 1/8" diameter pin, where 700/40X bolt stop spring is of torsion spring design.
