Just went to the official Winchester forum and was informed that on Feb 17th, 1955 Winchester gave the OK to produce the 308.

Lol i sent them an email. They changed 1953 to 1955 .

I have been offered a Mod 70 pre 64, chambered in .243 and has a bull barrel, as yet I have not seen the rifle nor do I have the serial number until the owner returns from vacation.

Is that vacation over? Hope they didn't take a trip around the world.

Ah the plot thickens, LLol! Could it be the internet is wrong? Yeah I found a correction to that 1953 date now 1955. Then I read a recent article is Handloader magazine that stated the 308 was introduced in 1952 and Warren Page necked it down to 243 in 1953 and Winchester liked the idea so they put it on the market in 1955. My guess is there is a lot of incorrect info out there on this. Of course my guess is based on precision guesswork, based on unreliable data, gathered from questionable resources, ! LOL!

From a very knowledgeable pre64 Model 70 guy.

The heavy barrel model was an option and made for the "Perry" shooters. They came in 243, 30-06, 300 H&H and maybe more. That model in 243 if in 95-97% would probably be worth 1400-1600

Per Blue Book of Gun Values:

Model 70 Target: 243 or 30-06 ('55 - '63), 24" "medium weight" barrel.

Model 70 Bull Gun: 300 H&H or 30-06 only (30-06 much rarer), 28" "heavy" barrel.

Model 70 Varmint: 220 Swift or 243 only, 26" "heavy" barrel ('56 - '63).
