Mod.70 .243 Rebuild

My first posting, and glad to hear about this forum! After reading some posts there seems to be a great number of knowledgeable riflemen here. I have been shooting a Bushmaster Varminter and have been very happy with it; but now it's time for a new project. I have recently acquired a 1972 Mod.70 chambered in .243 and am interested in building a tack driver with a moderate budget. This is new territory for me and would like to get some info concerning the A to Z of a rebuild. Some info about the barrel; it seems to be slightly pitted so it's out.I would like to know if anyone can direct me to a moderately priced barrel, and some one to do some bolt work. I would like to begin doing some varmint hunting as well as an occasional local match shoot. We have a great gun club in the area with a 600 yd range. I hope to have some input about a rebuild with some knowledgeable opinions and ideas, so if there is anyone with any advice and pointers I would be very appreciative.

For varminting and an occasional match, you would be hard pressed to beat the versilitity and accuracy of the 6mm BR. An 8 twist bbl will shoot everything from a 70 gr varmint bullet to a 107 Gr SMK. That gives you the ability to shoot out to 600 yds easily and depending on bbl length, 1 K yds. The cartridge will provide match grade accuracy that will impress you.

Don't skimp on the bbl. Any of the "Name" bbl makers like Shilen, Hart, Pac-Nor, Krieger, will provide an outstanding item. There are other bbl makers out there that can make good ones too, just make a choice and order up. I have had several outstanding bbls from Pac-Nor and their delivery times are very reasonable.

As a compromise, make your finished bbl length 28 inches. That will put you in a position where you can hunt with the rifle and enjoy the benefit of the extra velocity the bbl will afford.

In this caliber you can purchase standard dies and brass,lapua) while not cheap, is top notch for quality.

Get started on that set-up and you will be very happy.

Duck,real name would be nice) I agree with everything Bob said about the 6BR, you'll really enjoy it. A good barrel and good brass are one-time expenses and they pay dividends every time you go to the range.

When converting your Model 70 to 6BR, you should have the firing pin hole in the bolt bushed and the pin reduced in diameter. Send it to Greg Tannel http://www.gretanrifles.com/ and you'll get a great job, priced right, done fast.

If we knew what part of the country you're in, gunsmith recommendations would be simpler.
