Thoughts on a rebuild

I am going to rebuild a Savage this winter( Maybe) and I am going to castrate it.
I would like some thoughts ( not smart @ss comments) on the options I have,
1- take a Douglas barrel I have 1:11 twist, 30 cal. and rechamber to 30 br.
2- take a Criterion 1:13 twist 30 cal. and rechamber to 30 br.
3- buy a new barrel and start from scratch even though the barrels I have don't have 100 rounds on either.
4- leave it alone as a 6x45 and just shoot it.
If I swap out the barrels they will end up nutless and the lug will get dual pins.
The action has already been trued with a 2 oz. trigger installed and everything sits in a McMillan Edge stock.
This will be for short range BR and used for VFS, will also be using a Hunter class gun.
Thanks for looking.

First, I'll like to know where you got a 2oz trigger for a Savage and what brand it is. Like Merrill, I'd advise you choose a 1-17, 1-18 twist. If you are going to do this don't start out with the wrong twist. I don't care to be a smartass, but if you are shooting in registered competition, don't expect the Savage to be competitive. I have nothing against Savages, but in registered competition if you are going with something other than a custom action you are adding another handicap. If it's club level competition you may do well. Use custom bullets, 115-118gr. The only manufactured brand that is close would be Bergers.

Greyfox to answer your first question the trigger came from Sharp shooter supply after he T & T'ed the action. He no longer makes these competition triggers.
Yes it will be used for IBS matches, the new barrel will be nut less (shouldered and the lug will be pinned).
This action is very smooth and as a custom it has already done well at matches, (club level).
New barrel will be 1:17 or 1:18 which ever I can get the quickest.
It is the barrel, load and bullet that determine the accuracy and the shooter to some extent not the action, after all the Savage rifle team wins all over the world with stock guns.

Retired fire fighting turn out gear is now on.

Thanks for the reply about the trigger. It clarifies things. You should do OK at club level with a Savage. I will respectfully choose to disagree with your last sentence. While the barrel, bullets and shooter have quite a bit to do with winning, I have yet to see a Savage action on any winners lists in IBR or NBRSA registered competition. While it is possible that someone has shot a Savage action in UBR competition custom class, I don't recall any and I have directed matches at two locations for the past eight years. In fact, I am pretty certain that I have directed more UBR matches than anyone. Savages are very good hunting actions and I own several. But they are not competitive in custom class short range benchrest. When a person refuses to accept reality it automatically works against him. No flame intended or implied.
