MOA QUESTIONS

Ok, so my 220 swift is currently zeroed at 200 yards. Im confusing myself on this i know i am, but could use some input. My scope is a 1/4 @100, question is is the MOA value different per click or same. In other words would 1 click of the turret still equal 1/2 in. At 200?

Ok now here is where i am at. My brand new 220 swift i mentioned was officially taken over by my 9 year old. He has been walked up and is a crack shot with the 17. He shot first time yesterday and was hitting 2 in groups at 200. I have foreseen this but thought it would not happen until ltr summer. Now i have to upgrade again. Anyone have a groundhog gun they recommend? Was considering going with a 6.5 creedmore. Suggestions? I know of the usual calibers was looking for a 1k yard gun

Here is a link to a great video that explains MOA:

Thank you. I was just a bit confused bc once i zeroed it in i tries to losen turret and spin to zero and seem to throw it off. I am new to long range shooting, and it is great quality time with my boy. He lives for hunting and shooting and got his first triple crown this year during PA youth hunts. I am trying to keep him engaged since kids these days seem to want to sit and play damn video games than get outdoors. He just keep taking over guns which is a good thing so i need to uprade

1 MOA at 100 yards spans near exactly 1.047197551197 inches, twice that at 200 yards and three times that at 300 yards or 3.141592654”, which, without the suffix “inches”, just so happens is every digit as near exactly equal the decimal number returned from mashing the “Pi” function key on a cheap pocket calculator.

Rounding off a bit, 1 MOA at 100 yards spans 1.047”, at 200 yards it’ll span twice that or 2.094”, then at 300 yards 1 MOA spans 3.142” and so on forever. So, at 100 yards ¼ MOA spans .2618”, at 200 yards it’ll span twice that or .5236”, at 300 yards ¼ MOA spans .7854” and so on forever more. All ya need to help ‘remember’ such is a cheap pocket calculator with the “Pi” function.

Most any of the 6.5's out there will get you to 1K. The Creedmoor is a great choice, as is the Swede, 260 Rem and so on.... Pick one and dive in. Congrats that you and your son are having such a good time.

MOA is MOA, no matter what the distance. One MOA at 100 yards is (rounding it down) one inch. At 200 yards it's two inches, and so on. If you make a 1 MOA adjustment in your scope it will move in the direction of your adjustment (up,down, left or right) by one MOA relative to the distance you are shooting.

I have never been confused by MOA or mils. I've calculated spacing on sights and external adjusted scopes on BPCRs, but OMG, that relationship had never occured to me. I'm sitting here laughing at myself and the computer screen as I type this. Why did I never see that.

Seth - these pictures illustrating MOA and mils may help. FWIW - an angle is an angle, it doesn't change no matter how far out the lines (rays) go. The only thing that changes is how far apart a point on the rays will be as the distance increases (i.e. what we're "measuring at the target). This stuff really only becomes complicated when you start trying to convert "clicks" to some linear measurement on a target face at some specific distance. Leaving angular dispersion as an angle, rather than a linear measurement is a good place to start to minimize confusion, until you have a better picture in your mind of what's really going on.

May not be much of a big deal at 500 on game animals but at 1000 yards on paper or game, it's about a 5" difference MOA vs Inches.

Not sure what you are comparing to what, but at 1000 yards, 1 MOA is just less than 10-1/2 inches; 10.47" to be more precise.
At 1000 yds 5" is .48 MoA

At 1,000 yards 1 MOA is .472" (a little less than a half inch) larger than the extension of the angle that equals 1" at 100 yards. One is 10.472" and the other is 10.000".
