Mixing powder lots

I think the issue comes up with some powders like Varget that have a reputation for lot to lot variation. It seems to make sense to mix those before you start loading to homogenize the powder and minimize that variable.

I’ve never done it but I’d be interested to hear what folks think about it. I don’t see how it could hurt.

I have a bunch of different lot numbers on 1 pounders I bought before, during the "shortage" and after. Before I start shooting this season, they'll get mixed. I use a clean 5 gallon bucket a scoop and a clean funnel.

I remember reading about someone with a similar observation as OP's on color variation (though it was different shades of gray; I believe it was with two cans of Varget.) Hodgdon's reply was that they are the same powder from different lots; the color difference was due to graphite being used to coat a slightly faster lot as an ignition retardant as the new lot had a slightly faster rate.

Likely the same with the green and gray powders OP has.

what do you do when you need 30gr but theres only 16gr in the can?
16gr?? I've been known to roll that much up in a cigarette when my buddy's bummin' on me......

And back in the late 70's early 80's when we had a cribbage board inset into the counter at the gunshop, it was easy to blend that much into the ashtray....

Most I ever mixed was 48 pounds. Ordered 6 eights of H-4831-SC & requested the same lot if possible, but was shipped 3 jugs of one lot, two jugs of another, and a single jug of it's own.

Dumped all six into a big plastic tote, and played mad scientist pouring it back & forth between the two totes till I deemed it blended.

No big deal......
