Missing hunters

I’m not sure how many have caught this story. A couple young men were bow hunting for elk in the higher peak area right above where I live. They were last seen a week ago. People started searching for them on Saturday, after they hadn’t checked in with family. Their bodies were found today, but no info yet on what happened. This was along the Colorado and New Mexico state line above Chama NM.

They were from out of state and not prepared!
Left their equipment in the car!
Sorry for their families loss!

The town of Chama, NM is at nearly 8000 ft elevation itself. I would imagine the surrounding peaks would be at 10,000 ft plus. Even in September, those types of elevation get very cold at night. Very sad that these young men were not prepared for what was to come. Rip.

A lot of people in this thread need to shove their foot in their mouth.

These young men had spent a whole lot of time in the mountains. It was a freak accident.
Not sure what you mean by this? What actually was the cause of death? The latest article that I have read does not give any facts or details on the cause of death.

It has now been reported they were killed by a lightning strike. May they RIP.

My friend that I went to school with and worked together for many years guided hunters for several years back when he was in his late 20s or early 30s. The outfitter told him that 2 of the hunters had made arrangements to stay an extra day or 2 as they had shot at elk and had missed. They were both pro baseball players. My friend took them out back of the cabin and checked their rifles, neither could hit the target with regularity. They went up on the mesa and planned what they were going to do. They separated by about 200yds and walked through some timber, got out the other side and the weather started looking bad. He hollered to head for the truck. One got to him before the white out happened, the other was close. They almost froze to death before they all got to the truck. He said with almost no vision it took over an hour to find the truck. When I went out to hunt he put a pack of matches in every pocket I had. Bad shit can happen no matter how good and experienced you are in the woods.

I was pulling into a lodge in the Flaming Gorge area to be in position to float-fish the A Section of the Green River in the morning.

This was a late summer trip. As we drove up the mountains it was typical summer weather, sunny and mostly clear with a few clouds.

The Ashley National Forest and Flaming Gorge area is a beautiful place to visit and hardly the kind of place where your mind turns to tragedy. The aspen stands, the mountains, the lake, the road, the dam, it is all beautiful to visit and world class fishing.

I had my wife and young daughter along and went for a drive to show them around the lake and the dam area when weather rolled in. We heard many thunder boomers in the area so we called it a day and headed back to the lodge for dinner.

That evening as we went to the dining area some reports came in over the phone from the local Sherrif's office. There were tragedies in two different campgrounds where there were lightning fatalities and injuries of kids and adults. At one camp it was a father/son.

You can't imagine what it would have been like when they had to tell that mother she lost her husband and boy. The place is beautiful and doesn't evoke danger or death. Certainly, sending your little scouts there doesn't send your thoughts to danger, yet it came.

Everyone was a little quieter and kinder to each other that night at dinner.

There are times when it gives you a pause and makes you wonder if anything could have been done, but none of us know when it is our turn.

Our thoughts and prayers for those two young men, and all their loved ones. Memory Eternal
