Mirage

Hi,
I notice quite a bit of mirage in my scope on cold days as the barrel heats.
Can someone steer me to an inexpensive way to minimize that?

The cheapest and most effective means is finding a rigid cardboard tube that fits snuggly over the full objective tube of the scope and extends close to the end of barrel muzzle!!! Take it from a man that has studied and implemented Thermodynamics and Optics principles (the natural study of lens shape and mirage image - optical distortion and/or refraction of a real true image, Snell's Law)! Cardboard has really, really low thermal conductivity than sun shade attachments which are made from aluminum!! A really cheap , by experience, and better version of expensive stacking of scope sun shades without the thermal abortion and effects of dark tinting of aluminum threaded tubes!!! Been using this method for over 40 years, with great success on varmint and target testing!!!

An application of very thin, light weight, reflective plumbers vent tape on the outside of the cardboard tube will reflect the radiant heat generated from the barrel!!! But for P-DOG shooting, the mirror reflection of sun light is a pretty dead give a way sign of danger of the cautious and wary hole seekers of safety varmints!! Yeah, lease curious animals, less shooting!!!

This method, which is proven by past experiences, is really great on high temperature, long range prairie dog shooting!! The cardboard tube allows the heat waves from the barrel to flow around the tube, without heating the tube, and cancelling the visual effects from the direct barrel heat waves!! If it is effective on P-DOGS, it will be as affective on target shooting!!!

Better than more expensive fans or thermal barrel blankets (which holds in barrel heat and shields it from its surroundings, thus reducing thermal efficiency) which could alters the barrels POI!!

Is this the cheapest and most effective suggestion so far????

I've been using a piece of target, taped to the scope, for fifty years. One time, I made a more high tech unit with aluminum flashing and duct tape. Called it the Red Green model. Because it didn't work any better, and I was concerned about copyright infringement, I went back to the target. Cheap, easy, and works fine. WH

Aside from Mirage shields
If your scope accomodates a sunshade...use it
One of my B&L's I screw on multiple sunshades
Plus it makes it look like you got a 3 foot long scope, which is just cool.

You may also be able to adapt something like this

What does it hurt by hanging something off the Objective Tube????? Most scopes are threaded for sun shade tubes!!! It is better than holding the heat in on the barrel by creating a barrier around the barrel, restricting air flow to cool that barrel!!! On hot days, I have a cardboard tube that slips over my sun shades!!! You can still get some heat waves off the barrel past the stock forearm tip!!! Especially on hot, shiny calm days where you can shoot further in range!! Those are the best days for shooting dogs and testing loads, totally eliminating barrel generated heat waves or barrel inducted mirage!!

One of the "takeaways" from my Thermodynamics class is thermal efficiency!!! The ability to transfer heat from the SYSTEM (the rifle barrel itself) to its SURROUNDINGS (the air or environment). This principle is derived from the 1st LAW OF THERMODYNAMICS (CONSERVATION OF HEAT)!! THIS PRINCIPLE IS USED IN INTERIOR BALLISTICS TO ACCOUNT FOR ALL THE HEAT GENERATED FROM THE COMBUSTION OF THE POWDER AND THE FICTION OF THE BULLET!!! This is why forearm venting in stocks aids in the efficiency of heat transfer!!! Covering the barrel restricts the systems heat to the surroundings, holding in the barrel heat, making the barrel hotter and softer!!!! The softer steel will wear faster, and bend easier, possibly changing the harmonics slightly!!!! Why do target shooters do this??? It violates thermodynamic principles and theories!!!

Running a fan on those calm days helps!! But, it just changes the angles of the waves!!! Use both the tube and the fan on those calm days at the bench!!! This will improve the thermal and optical conditions!!!

Those are nice scopes Bill, Very under rated and a good bargain if you find them for $200.00 or so. I have several of them.

And ESPECIALLY,,,,,,, since heat migrates to..... and concentrates at the TOP of any steel part
---------------------------------
Heat a piece of steel with a torch to 500F and hit the top with an Temp Gun
The top will be 500F while the bottom may be 300F
Now flip it over so the bottom is the top
Suddenly, the bottom which was at 300F will quickly climb toward the 500F mark because it is the top now.
Heat is always escaping most at the top, because heat rises.
---------------------------------
And now we're gonna block that with a levolor blind

What scope is it?
These are Tasco World Class Plus, From the 90's. These were made in 10-40x50 and 8-32x50 and 6-24x50. Very clear scopes and well made. I am surprised every time I look through one how well these were made. Most of them have very fine crosshairs with small dot reticules. These are made in Taiwan, Not China. They have very similar characteristics to the Tasco Super Sniper Scopes also from that era that are still being made and are definitely worth the low price they sell for.
These Tasco World class plus are no longer made. SWFA has kept the Super Sniper line alive.

Gotcha, I didnt know they made a 10-40
I have an 8-32x44 World Class, and yes agree they are a very nice scope for the price
I could have sworn the older Tasco's (Hakko) were Japan made scopes.
Tasco not being an actual Mfgr but actually a distributor of various scopes so they farmed out from various scope makers and put their name on it.
I always liked any Japan made Tasco,
---------------------------------------------
I had to double check to make sure my memory wasn't going screwy on me
Its kind of hard to see but yeah, mine are Japan Tascos
