Mineral spirits

Mineral spirits is pretty benign stuff, as solvents go. Pretty good for brushing out a rimfire action or general de-grunging, but helpless with copper or lead fouling.

Romans used morning urine to whiten their teeth, but it damaged the enamel, and caused tooth decay, the ammonia should remove copper.:eek::eek::eek:

I seem to remember reading something about them drinking water from lead pipes as well.

Rather difficult to learn from mistakes that first drive you mad and then take your life.

I use mineral spirits in the steel/tin cans, not the plastic containers to clean the exterior and interior parts of my guns, never scrubbed the barrels with it. It works great when re finishing wood stocks as well. It seems to clean the pours or the wood and after it dry's allows the stain or oils to penetrate better.

Yup, watch what you buy when referring to mineral spirits. The crap in the plastic jug is worthless.
Being old school and if it works don't fix it, I still use media. All the chatter on carbon around here, I put a couple of caps full of mineral spirits in my tumbler along with the wax/polish. It does as good as any of the steel
pins.
Never had an issue with it causing problems with ignition as some may think. It flashes off pretty quick.
