Whatever gives you a useable sight picture.

This isn't as smart-assed an answer as it sounds. Different people have different perceptions of what is a "good",i.e., acceptable) versus a "bad",i.e., unusuable) sight picture.

Consensus says 6x is probably a good minimum, 10x is acceptable. Somewhere between 10-24x is common, and some shooters are using up to 42x.

Optical quality of the scope, ruggedness, repeatability of adjustments, and elevation range available are all more crucial factors in selecting a scope than magnification alone.
