Might consider taking a class at a local vocational school. I think personal instruction is better than just reading a book.

Have you ever picked up one of Village Press's magazines? Home Shop Machinist, Machinist's Workshop? Book stores sell them, and each issue has a book sales advertisment section. It'll give you a title & author to take to your local library. Most libraries will order in books on loan from other libraries; it's a good way to check a selection out to see if it's got the information you're looking for, without risking the purchase price.

Otherwise, the advice on taking a course in a local junior college or vocational school is probably your best option.

I was a high school Biology teacher and out of self interest I also taught Shops or Tech Ed or Industrial Arts or whatever the current buzzword is.

The June of the previous school year I would go to the "real" machine shop or welding shop or woodworking or auto teacher and have him show me the ropes. These guys all had Tradesman papers and everything was second nature.

There is no replacement for a skilled human being showing you the ins and outs. Without prior knowledge a book just doesn`t cut it.

I would show my appreciation by buying them a jug of beer at the corner pub. This diverse timetable assignment allowed me to reach a full pension after 32 years in the classroom with my sanity still intact.

Go to your local community college. They should have an industrial machining program. Talk to the instructor and tell him what you are interested in learning.

While you will do some of the same projects as the rest of the class (cause you are learning basic machining techniques) you can also get some projects specific to your interest.

There is no substitute for learning one on one from an experienced machinist. You will keep you fingers and eyes a lot longer under their watchful eye.
