Military Service?

A lot a good info in this drifted thread. I learned a few things I didn’t know.

I was fortunate enough to get copies of all my evaluations and misc records from my service record before discharge, a complete copy of my medical records, and also a microfiche. I seem to think I may even have an x ray or two….. Wish they had been more forthcoming about the VA back then.

As far as the OPs question on posers, they are even in the service and willing to do it. After boot camp, I stayed in Orlando to attend the first segment of school. Ran into a guy at the E Club that I went through boot camp with. He had a National Defense ribbon on… at 18 years old… too young to have seen a conflict to have earned it. I called him out on it. He said he wasn’t taking it off, as it made him look cooler.

Construction Electrician here. Seabees Can Do!

Simple way to check. Ask him what his MOS was. Military Occupation Specialty (Job)

ISS
Also where he attended basic training and the location of MOS training. I had a fellow tell me he attended EOD school in Colorado those that know know that the school has only been in Maryland and currently in Florida.

My discharge certificate was lost in a house fire, do any of you guys know how I can get a replacement if possible?
Yeah the VA will send you all of your records on digital format. I had to get copies many years ago to prove my weapons qualifications for the Sheriff Dept in order to obtain my conceal carry permit without the need to attend a firearms training course. Back then my records all came on a CD in the mail. CDs were the fancy technology back then. Not sure what they do now. Probably password protected downloadable documents in an email would be my guess. Just make sure you print everything out on paper.

And get a safe! Not a cheap 30 minute fire rated junker either. Get a good 2 hr rated safe that will actually protect your important belongings. Well worth the investment.

Or rent a safe deposit box.

Totally disagree. I don't even keep money in a bank! Just minimal amounts for daily expenses like coffee in the morning or fuel in the trucks. Have you been reading what's going on with the banking system? They are still crashing left and right but the media wont cover it. No way in hell would I keep important possessions or documents in a bank. Not now and not ever!

As a vet I would not care is someone asked to see my 214. I’d tell them to piss off. Anyone who as served in the Army at least would be able to see a faker for what he/she is.

I have an 80% rating at the VA and my care is all free. If you have less than a 30% disability rating you must pay a minimal rate.

You trust a bank???? ;-);)
I don't put money in that box. I prefer tangible assets. I don't trust cash either. It's based on nothing but a faith in that piece of paper. Same with Wallstreet.
If a bank wants to sieze my personal papers that would be difficult for me to replace then good luck to them getting anything of value out of it. It's simply for convenience and a bit more secure than a box in the garage. My birth certificate, my original SS card, DD214 and car titles are all that are in there.

My Ex wife got a locksmith to come out and open the safe while I was in the hospital. You trust whatever you want to, I'll do the same.

See post #132.

Especially Olongapo, PI.
Crossing the bridge to town was an experience
There was a reason we had all our shots/vaccinations when we left CONUS.
Amen brother. That was part of it but our props really stirred up the bottom, especially in Hong Kong.

There are many documents used to prove service and/or benefit eligibility. The DD-214 is only one. If you could supply branch of claimed service, years active and/or reserve it might help. If there are claims of valor, there could be a crime. Specifics of the claim and how/why the claims were made/used would help sort that issue out. If the individual is receiving unearned benefits, that is a crime and believe it or not it occasionally happens.

Give me 5 minutes with a Navy imposter; there is a 95% probably I’ll sort the truth. If the person really studied his fake identity, it might require a phone call. Find a retired senior enlisted member of the subject’s claimed service, they will be able to help. I’ve got 29+69 and documents to prove all of it including 5 years on Secretary of Navy Retiree Council after retirement.

Retirees carry ID cards, have TRICARE medical, get paid monthly and are usually ugly, stubborn, and eventually most of us get fat. Hopefully the individual just talks too much. Most of the time the person did serve but embellished routine military service because of insecurity or a need of attention. Everybody can’t be Rambo. Some of us had to write the reports and occasionally someone actually read them. I helped another section out when we were caught up. A former english teacher I was helping marked it up in red and sent it back to me! No good deed…. It’s one of my favorite stories.

Feel free to pm me if I can help.

I said there were many.

Until recently, the only Veterans Cemetery Idaho had was one containing the Confederate POW's buried here. I have my Father's flag they covered his casket with. He is buried in Jefferson Barracks outside of St Louis. My Mother joined him in November of 2021. I have that flag, and when I check out it will cover me for the ceremony.

And now for the OP, did we help any or did we just confuse you more with our Ramblings?
Yes, I now have a few ideas in weeding out the chaff. What really got me thinking about this guy was how easy he spouted off of the things he had done. In my family, uncles that served in Vietnam, my father who served in Korea, and two grandfathers who served in WWII when it came to their time of service, it wasn't something that was easily talked about. Basically, their time of service was left unsaid. This guy, within a few minutes of our first conversation began to tell me of his accolades. He may have done these things, but my experience with those who served in some of the toughest situations don't tell the stories so easily; it's known, but left in the past. I hope this makes sense. Thanks for the help, and although this thread did weave about a bit it was fun and interesting to see.
