Military Service?

Agree - for years all I had to do was show my Driver's License which shows I am a veteran to get veteran discounts at Lowe's and Home Depot.

Now they require you to register with some online service. I tried to explain to them that when I was in your SS number was your service number and I am not putting that online. So, they denied me the discount even though I produced my Honorable Discharge Certification along with my Driver's License. I was really pissed and went someone else to buy my refrigerator.
Yeah. I don't like that either but they've had to go there due to liars and fraud.

Sad state of affairs.

Talking about online and things like that. Thought that was easily discrenable in my post of you read the whole thing. I've never once in my life had a person ask to see my DD214 for personal reasons or to verify my service for their own appeasement. Wouldn't show it to them if they did ask because it makes no difference to me
I don't 'beat my own drum' either. Usually it's the ones who talk the loudest who are the most full of crap.

My FIL has been trying to get VA benefits for Agent Orange exposure for decades. The man has obvious service related and exposure problems. If it weren't for his meticulous documentation and photographs he'd probably never get any compensation. It appears he finally will. He just got notified today. I'm not sure if I feel happy for him or if I empathize even more.
Most of his fellow service men are now deceased.
I’m happy, but don’t know what FIL means

The change from service number to SSN was '67 or '68. I was irritated that my discharge paper (Aug 1968) had my SSN on it.

By the way, for those that are not familiar, Draftees had the prefix of US in front of their service number.

Ran across a guy like that a couple of weeks ago.
Constantly talking up his Mil resumé.
I was with an Army pal and we were both like, "this guy is so full of it".

BS flags went up right away.

Supposedly an army sniper and instructor. Or, was that his USMC time and he was a sniper/PMI.
He said so much that I finally tuned him out.
Couldn't hit a 12" plate at 400 yards with a 308.
Told him my wife shoots the 6" one with her 22...

There is not a place to search for people's military service. I think it only becomes public information 62 years after that person separated. And even then, it's not online and I'm sure the request process is convoluted.

I agree with the above about asking to see his VA card. Pretty much all veterans have one. I got one soley for the discounts at stores and most vets I know do the same thing.
Not every veteran has a VA card.

I served 6 years in the Navy and don't have one.

The Navy does not issue a 'veteran' ID card.

I can do that at 300 on a good day with calm wind. Never tried 600. Probably embarass myself.

Might be a case of improper wording? I got an ID card with pink background for inactive reserve. Still have it.

I don't show any VA id to get discounts at Lowes or Home depot. I went on line and applied. They verified my VA status. Once in the system I ask for a Veteran discount and they verify with my phone number.

When I was discharged in 67 I got a packet of documents besides the 214s. It had all four years of my performance reviews, several letters of accommodations, dates of promotion etc. I was transferred to the inactive naval reserve for two years. That is when I received my discharge certificate.

My FILs arms look similar but not quite that bad.
Both my forearms and face. No where else really.
Here’s the upside. I’ve had over 300 procedures on my forearms and over 150 on my face. Because of the operations on my face it is like a face lift. When I’m going through a period of remission I don’t look my age at all. There’s no loose skin anywhere.
Then it starts all over again.
Please give my best to your FIL.

Need a little help here in trying to determine someone's military service background. Here is a bit of the backstory and a full disclosure statement of myself. I have no personal military service. Lot's of my family have served but I have not, so I'm ignorant in some things military. In my circle there is a new guy making his way in, and he is saying some things about his military service that from my perspective just don't jive. In fact the red flag has gone up with me in regards to stolen valor. Is there a website I can go to that will help verify his service in the military, so I can put some of this to rest? Not trying to get into his personal life, I just feel compelled to have the basic question answered of did he really serve or is he blowing smoke?
Had to go back and read the post a second time. How old is he will tell you a lot based on what he is saying. When one of your MIL buddies is there that has a MIL ID card or VA card, have him break it out and ask the "one " in doubt if his is like it. Many ways to skin a cat. With the SSN it is an easy look up.

Here’s an example of a forearm in 2015.
Agent orange pops up decades later for no reason
Probably Agent Purple

He just had a large cancerous tumor removed from his left cheek but otherwise he's been pretty good. I'll relay your message and wish you well also.
