Mid Range Prone Regional, Memphis TN

The Memphis Sport Shooting Assn. is proud to announce the 2012 Mid Range prone regional for both NRA any rifle and both classes of FClass. The Memphis range is home to well over 60 National Records for both sling shooters and FClass shooting, both classes shooting side by side for two days on a wonderful facility.
There will be a great informal Memphis BBQ meal on Sat after the match to tell lies and explain all your errant shots to your peers.
Please come on over and enjoy time with some of the former and current National Champions and National Record holders.

Well it looks like Russ beat me to posting the bulletin tonight. Thanks bud!

There apparently has been some misinformation about the match, so here's the skinny:

It is a Mid-Range Prone and F-Class event with 15 shots per firing point at 300, 500 and 600 yards each day. F-Class shoots scope both days (unless you're really brave and want to shoot irons!). Prone shoots irons on Saturday and either irons or scope on Sunday. Registration begins at 7:15am and ends promptly at 8:15am. Firing will commence at 9:00am both days.

Bring enough ammo to shoot a 2-man team match (20 shots per person) after the completion of Match 3 on Saturday. We'll have a signup sheet at the registration area and will shoot if time permits. Squadding and payment on the 600 yard line.

The carriers are still running great and the range is ready. Just looking for some perfect weather! I hope to see you there.

Doug

PS - Email me at [jdfletcher (at) bellsouth (dot) net] if you plan to attend so that I can order enought BBQ for Saturday evening!

Next weekend. Dont miss your chance to shoot with National Champions and National record holders on one of the nicests ranges in the region. ( though its a little nicer in a monthor so when its all green again)

Lets not forget the chance to tell tall tails at the club and Memphis BBQ after shooting is complete on Sat. This is where all the real shooting is done!!!! Best of luck to those who will be attending. Drive safe and Have fun.. Ill be watching for the results.

Russ, when are you going to make a match? I'm looking forward to meeting you! I'm still in load development for the .223. I do appreciate your help!

Good luck fellas. Looks like a nice temp for this weekend not to hot not to cold. Sat could get some drizzles but I have found that when you get a light drizzle ussually no change in wind if there is any= National Records.

Justin;
I cant tell you how bad I want to be there. Keep an eye on Falcon Pilot, he is the guy to beat....Hard holder that guy.

If anyone has an extra person comming that can help Doug input the scores into the computer as you guys go along the results will be done a Whole lot faster. Thats ussually the problem is not enough Volenteer's to do the paperwork.

Again Good luck Shoot good.

I am packed as well. My whole family is coming along as well. 6.5 hour drive after work today, so will get to Memphis a little late tonight.

Now to find someone to shoot with for the team competition.

After Day one Chris Anderson of Arkansas shot a perfect 450-30X with his new Dasher... Just two X's short of current National Champion Jim Murphy's National Record set in 2009 at the same range and Match. Right behind Chris is 6BR member Falcon pilot with one point down.
(That was the FO class )

The Prone Sling leader after Day one is Doug Fletcher of Memphis on his Home range with a 448-26X. Doug reported tricky winds at 600 yards, not alot of wind, but just enough to put you out which caught alot of the other shooters.

Congrats to Chris on an outstanding performance of shooting a perfect 450 Flcass target. Course of fire is 15 shots at 300,500 and 600 yards for two days.

Best of luck to all.

Does anyone have the latest socres....................? I had a couple friends that made it and was wondering how the did.

I wanted to drop a big thank you to Doug and the others that put on this event. MSSA is an awesome club and the people there were very nice. I met a lot of nice people and great shooters. I wish MSSA wasnt 6.5 hours away, you could bet I would shoot there a lot more.

Here are a couple pictures from this past weekend.

I too would like to see the final scores.

It was another very well run event thanks to Doug and the MSSA crew. The FTR match ended in a near dead heat. Ronnie Ralston and I tied on points (877) but I beat him out by one x! Dale Carpenter had the best of us going into the last 600yd stage but the Memphis winds got him. He ended up just one point back in 3rd place.

Chris took the F Open win and Doug took the sling shooter win.

Thanks to my fellow shooters for making this a fun weekend.

Laura

I know everyone wants scores.... I'll have them posted later tonight. I was completely exhausted at the end of the day, but what a great weekend for shooting! Weather was great, competition was great, food was great... it ALL was great! We had 49 shooters total and stiff, close competition down to the last match.

Doug

Take your time Doug! I appreciate all your work this weekend and the weeks before to put on a match of this magnitude! We were exhausted as well. I especially appreciate your accomodations for Joe to keep him shooting!

And, yes, I really am classified as a SharpShooter! But, hopefully, not for much longer!

2012 West Tennessee Mid-Range Prone Regional Championship Results
March 24-25, 2012

Well, another Regional has come and gone here at Memphis Sport Shooting Association. What a weekend! The weather was beautiful and there was just enough wind on Sunday to keep you honest. We had a total of 49 shooters for the weekend split pretty evenly between F-Open, F-TR and Prone. For the first time, we ran the event in 4 relays, and while it extended the shooting time a little, I believe that the pits and line ran better than 3 relays of the past...

Saturday started with almost no wind at all and the Match #1 scores show it! Tim Thompson shot a 150-13x in F-Open and Ken Foster shot an incredible 150-14x in Prone. Ken shot out of competition because he shot with a scope as “practice for Sunday,” as he said. I had the pleasure of scoring for him and watching that 6mmBR Barnard/Eliseo shoot the X-ring like a laser beam! I really messed him up though by telling him that score would be a National Record on Sunday.... it got in his head. (Sorry Ken!) While a slight breeze and mirage picked up throughout the day, it wasn't enough to separate the competition much. The top 4-5 competitors were within 2 points of the lead at the end of the day, except for the F-Open category. Chris Anderson had a 4 shot lead with a perfect score of 450-30x in F-Open, Justin Price lead the F-TR category with 439-15x (he won't be a Sharpshooter for long!), and I held a slim 1 point lead in Prone.

Following the days official matches, we held our 2-man team fun match. Some of the teams were pickup teams, others planned to shoot together, but all of us had fun! I had the pleasure (?) of shooting with Ron Krelstein in the Match Rifle category. Ron's a great coach, but a terrible student! There was a huge wind reversal about mid string and I yelled "HOLD!" I saw him relax and then 2 seconds later, BANG. Wide 8 at 3 o'clock! DANG! He then turns and looks at me and smiles.... He said he couldn't stay in position forever! Anyway, despite Ron's blunder we held on to win the Match Rifle title with a 396-17x. The F-Open team title went to Jim Fowler and Chris Anderson with a 396-19x, the F-TR title went to Ronnie Ralston and Tom Jones with a 395-16x, and the Service Rifle team title was won by Luther Townsend and Jonny Easley with a great score of 365-4x. (Try shooting a short sight radius with a post front sight ALL DAY on a 600 yard or reduced target!)

Of course, the first day isn't complete without some famous Memphis BBQ! This year we had Hog Wild cater the event and the 'que was awesome! Better still was getting together with fellow shooters and making memories....

Sunday started as a mirror image of Saturday, but perhaps a few degrees warmer. However, by early morning it became obvious that the NNW wind was going to cause some problems and keep you on your toes. The MSSA range in notorious for a “swirl” that occurs within the range where the flags are pointing one way and the mirage is running opposite, and the NNW wind only made it worse. Folks who have shot here before may have had a little advantage...

Tim Thompson and David Decareaux made strong runs with 449's in F-Open, but couldn't overcome Chris Anderson's lead. At the end of the day, the F-Open Gold, Silver and Bronze went to Chris Anderson, David Decareaux and Jim Fowler, respectively. The leaders in the Prone category held pretty true to Saturday's standings with no one giving ground. I, Darrell Landolt and Bob Beckett finished Gold, Silver and Bronze. Probably the surprise of the tournament was in the F-TR category. While being in 5th place at the end of Saturday, and without winning a single match, Laura Perry just kept shooting very good, consistent scores. This lead to her winning the Gold by one X over Ronnie Ralston (Silver), followed one point behind by Dale Carpenter who picked up the Bronze.

Anyone reading the results file will notice that we have Match Rifle and Service Rifle categories. These are combined for the NRA Prone category, but separated out locally because we have a large number of service rifle shooters in the area. It helps to promote competition and encourages participation. We award the winner of the Service Rifle category with a special Service Rifle Winner plaque. For this year's regional, that award and title went to Aubrey Brock who finished with an outstanding 851-25x! Two straight long days staring at a post front sight... Wow! Great shooting Aubrey!

To conclude, I want to thank all the staff and folks at MSSA who helped set everything up and get the range ready for the event. A special thanks goes to Allen Stephenson who asked how he could help and agreed to be the Range Officer and run the match allowing me to shoot. Thanks Allen. We will be reviewing the scores against the National Records and submitting paperwork accordingly.

Finally, we'll be holding the Tennessee Mid-Range State Championships October 27-28, 2012. It will be a 20-shot per match event. Be on the lookout for the match bulletin. Also, after talking with Jim Fowler, we'll be holding a special barrel tossing contest with a very special prize. All proceeds of the event will go charity. More details will follow.

I hope to see you on a range somewhere soon! Be safe and shoot straight.

Doug
