Michigan Carnage

Yes! One of my goals was to retire and shoot groundhogs. My favorite Bible verse is Psalm 23..He makes me lie down in green pastures...he restores my soul". My kid the fly fisherman likes the still waters part! I hope that in heaven there are groundhogs that come out, I get to whack em, and tomorrow they just pop up again! :)

several things... first where about you in Michigan?.. I am just north of grand rapids... and yes people don't realize how much damage they cause.. they think we are just out to shoot things... ( a farmer myself) I've seen guys have tractor front tire spindles snap off in chuck hols... ive seen them push up rocks that have ruin chopper knives.. last hear i was round baling went over one... the tines threw a marble size rock forward and broke out my rear window ( 900$ later...) a month later.. soy beans were so tall that i didnt see the first part of the hole and ran a rock into my combine... (2000$ later ) ... that's just a few stories i have... so yes besides being know by every farmer around from growing up farming my whole life.. they know when they see me driving around at 10 mph what im up to .. and its not creepin around haha..... there is a couple of us farmers around here... a couple row crop and a couple fruit growers that have a competition every year... looser buys a box of 22 mag ammo for everyone...

Drove thru Marlette this past week. Lots of open farm fields and places for ground hogs to enjoy destroying. Actually saw a couple. Looks like you have a buffet of chucks to keep you busy. That's great. I travel the state daily and seems the thumb region and South of the rifle deer zone are the best spots to locate ground hogs. Obviously it's riddled with farms. Used to shoot ghogs for a farmer in Jackson county when I was a younger guy. Shots were always under 150 yards and the 22 mag was my go to gun. Eventually I graduated to a 22-250 and ranges extended somewhat because of scouting certain areas for longer shots. I definitely need to do some door knocking again to gain access to some farms. Most farmers welcome ground hog extermination.

buddy and i got 18 this weekend... we go out with a verity of rifles... we both have 6.5 cm... than one of us brings a 22 mag.. and the other will bring ( me ) 223, (him) 204.... so we have lots of options...

20160708_113556.jpg Thought the stars were aligned today and i was going too get 2with 1 shot but wouldn't you know it, just as i was about to let one fly something spooked 1 so i had to settle for the dumb one.

Just don't think of Michigan as anything but urban, crime, poverty and a little fishing. Surprised there is a rural blade of grass in the whole state except for the hunting in the upper peninsula.

Neat stories and pictures. Thanks for sharing.

CaptainMal, it's too bad that your opinion of Michigan isnt better than that. Don't judge Michigan by Detroit, Flint, Saginaw, Muskegon and Benton Harbor. Crime and poverty plagues every state in our nation. Michigan has a (freshwater) fishery that rivals any state in this country. The Upper Peninsula is definitely awesome as far as wild undeveloped realistate and wildlife. Misfire lives in a rural farmland the spans millions of acres of alfalfa and beans rich in ground hog habitat. No it's not Ohio or Pennsylvania or West Virginia for ground hogs but his pics tell his story. Our deer are healthy and of good size. Bears are healthy and numerous and in 2/3 of our state. Turkey populations are soaring and waterfowl rebounded nicely over the years. Guess there are some downfalls to our state but Florida isn't at the top of the list of great States either as far as more than just my opinion goes. MSN listed it in the top 10 most dangerous States. Michigan for some reason didn't make it. I think of Florida as one of the hurricane states. Not real appealing to live in during summer months either unless you love 100% humidity and 100+ degree temps. I'm sure it has its pluses like does Michigan but certainly no more, especially for the sportsman. I personally like my deer bigger than the coyotes I hunt. I hear the turkeys are decent in Florida and I know the gators are as well. I own property in Naples Florida near alligator alley. Gator hunting would be fun. The meat is fabulous. I guess everyone's opinions vary. I'll take Michigan over Florida from April thru November. That means I give Florida a 4 out of 12 rating. Michigan gets an 8 out of 12. Oh, by the way, has Florida ever beat Michigan in football. Just checking. I'm actually not really a football fan. Just wondered tho.

Well captainaMal I'm sorry your opinion of Michigan is so low there are a great many opportunities in this state from hunting fishing or trapping to just enjoying our great Outdoors.
where I live is extremely rural population of my small town is barely two thousand people one of those places you used to hear about where everyone knows your name and watches your back.
glad we build so many popular beautiful automobiles in this state too makes it a lot easier for all you people that don't like the state to leave
