What are these stencils doing? Are they blocking light or blocking the movement of some kind of material?
If blocking light check with a local screen printing business. They will often develop them for you.
If they are to block the movement of material maybe a vinyl cutter would work? Often times screen printers and sign shops have a vinyl cutter too.

They are blocking the contact of the electrolyte solution and the electrical current from the metal you are marking. The open parts of the stencil allow contact and the process removes metal where this contact occurs. I hope that makes sense.

Just poking fun at you. I probably should have gotten something 10 years ago but they were pretty pricey then. I still might if the right contract comes along.

We have several local gunsmiths that drop by to have us laser engrave their barrels. Crud, even I have stopped marking my LRBR barrels with a permanent marker and now use the laser......

New Hermes pantographs are not hard to find and not that expensive. Manual drag machines are about 2-300 and sets of types are about $100 each. If you wanted to get a powered head go to about 500-800.

Is there a specific one or model that works well for barrels. I have recently been looking at these?

One with a vise would be pretty much turn key. Make sure you have a complete font set that is easy to read. Upper and lowercase is handy to have. I think i have about 6 or 8 font sets and only use pretty much the one. The others...some letters look the same, lol. Here is mine that I've been using for years...

Most of the ones i see look like there isn't a place for a vice that would hold a barrel.

I messed around wit the electro etch a little this morning. I put some of that clear packaging tape on a piece of 4140 steel and cut out a few places on it. Using a solution of salt and water, I dipped a q-tip in it and put the swab on the negative side of my battery charger. On the 100A jump start setting I could get a .005" etch pretty easily, I measured it with a depth mic. I'm going to make a proper pad for this and order some stencils. I was hoping for a deeper etch, I may try some different electrolyte solutions.

Just messing around this afternoon after reading this, I thought I'd try salt etching too. I'm getting varying degrees of black but easy enough. I used a ol computer power supply using a 12v wire.

Edit: my wife used her Silhouette machine to make a vinyl stencil.
