metal gong targets

What material??? AR 500? AR 550? Anyone know difference? Seems like there is another one? CR10?

550 harder than 500. 550 is what lots of gongs made of--sort of an"industry std." Close range/fast bullets hard on it. For 100yds use 1/2 in. Further out,say 200, may get by with 3/8ths---all depending on caliber/velocity of course.

I just bought 4 AR550 12" plates for the Club. Hung two yesterday at the 100 yard range. We shall see how tuff they are. The last two I hung lasted about 6 months (turkey and pig). Those guys shooting 50's and 338's at 100 tore them up. Still haven't figured out why you could shoot a 50 cal. at 100 yards. We have a ram at 300 yards they could shoot at. It doesn't stand up to AP but does ok with lead.

AR500 is fine for everything (AR550 too). Just adjust thickness based on the distances you shoot.

Close targets with heavy/fast rounds = 1/2"
Further out 3/8" (most common)
Big ELR targets can be 1/4" (lighter cheaper and ring/move better)

Don't shoot softer steel with centerfire. It's a bad idea and could be dangerous with richochets.

I remember seeing that a few years ago--lucky guy

We have a Dar-winner !!!!! :)

Muleman69 and I have a pretty good collection of AR500 gongs that we shoot from 300 to 750 yards with everything from .223 to .338 Lapua Mag. They are holding up very well :)

"those guys" should be stopped for everyone's safety. Who cares about the targets at that point. A .50 at 100 yards is insane!

We have a chart on our website to be used as a guideline for minimum distances - for safety and target longevity.

Be careful, guys!
