Meplat trimming and Bullet pointing

Tony, The real limiting factor is aging eyes...... Yes Bullet trimming and pointing does help.........jim

I can't use that excuse anymore. The magicians at Johns Hopkins have installed new lenses and I just tested at 20/16 uncorrected. Will see how that helps over the next couple of weeks.

Wayne.

Be careful what you wish for , Wayne. :D You have to be old enough to qualify for Medicare to get it done at a reasonable cost. ::)

Tony, Well you have taken care of that one, it's lets see what they can do with the aging body. If i got down in the sitting or prone position you would have to call 911...........jim

Meplat and Bullet pointing

I see the statement "anything under 400yds and your wasting your time pointing/weighing/sorting etc." and up until about 2 years ago i believed it, but when F-Class went to the new target and its tiny X-ring i think the above statement went out the window, ANYTHING you can do to shrink your groups is beneficial and NOT a waste of time.
just my 2 cents worth.

I doubt anyone could argue that covering any and every detail is a bad idea -unless the end results suck. With the latter, more consideration would then go to higher returns on efforts.

If you can put every attention to every matter, well then your a friggin monster! You got it..

Great thread!

Though are there any LR .30 cal shooters that do this? I would like to hear what they have experienced? Good or bad, lets hear it!

I've pointed 6mm, 6.5mm, 7mm and 30 cal and there is less benefit as the caliber increases but still worth doing for F-Class competition. I was told to expect these results during discussions with Bryan Litz and John Whidden. Apparently, the meplat has less effect on the BC as the bullet diameter increases so the gain in uniformity goes down as the diameter goes up. However, trimming and pointing can still be the difference between winning and losing F-class matches.

Trimming and pointing caliber .30, 230 Hybrids in .308 Win reduced my vertical by about 1/3. It was already pretty good but noticeably improved. I didn't notice any effect on group size. Both pointed and unpointed shot ~1/4 MOA at 100 yards. I've processed 6mm, 7mm and caliber .30. It has benefited all three.

Steve,
When you say a 1/3. How many inches do you think at 1k. I'm going to start this process. If it will help vertical I will definitely give it a shot.

If I can shrink my vertical by even an inch I think it would be work it.

KT

I cut the vertical from ~18" to ~12". Both are approximations as my bipod efforts with the 230 Hybrids are still not up to the task. My lot of 230's (3846) has pretty large meplats, ~.080". I don't know if they are all like that. After trimming and pointing, they are ~.050-.055". They vary in length a bit, too. I usually trim .010" and that will clean up all but one or two bullets per hundred. The 230's need .015" from the longest to get almost all.

6 inches is a pretty large gain. I'm looking to trim and point the 180 hybrids and the 140's. Using both for my midrange and longrange F/O guns.

In your picture the point is filled in with shavings. Do you clean that out or leave it the way it is.

KT

Leave it. As soon as the bullet leaves the muzzle and air is compressed in whatever point cavity exists, it will reach equilibrium and act as if the point is solid.

Careful what you wish for. You'll be trimming and pointing all the time. ;) [br]
Have you heard any rumors about what bullet weight is on deck?

When Bryan and I talked about it at Perry this year.. he was said that it would be somewhere between 83 to 87 grains.. he was not sure as to the final weight, but he knew it would be inside this range.

Why do you think it didn't have any effect on your group size?

It may have. The rifle was already shooting 1/4 MOA groups at 100 yards and I just couldn't see the difference. I am not a very good benchrest shooter and that is probably my limit with a moderately heavy recoiling rifle. Our wind conditions are such that making comparisons at longer distance is somewhat meaningless.

Thanks Steve. I have been shooting the 230's and so far like them. I also been doing a fair amount of reading about trimming and pointing but is always nice to hear from actual experience.

Steve,
I shoot the 210 VLD's in my .300wm I don't think you will see much of a difference at 100 yds. but at 1000 I definitely noticed a difference, mostly in vertical but my group size shrunk a little also.
Wayne.

P.s I just saw in the paper just now that Bob Munden passed away in Missoula Montana, only seventy years old, what a great loss to the shooting world.
