Me & the 6GT

Just finished up a fun little project and thought I would share since there seems to be a bit of interest around the 6GT lately.

Rifle Specs:
Remington Model Seven trued
Bartlein 7.5 twist 22" 3b contour (suppressed)
Timney Trigger
HS Precision Sporter stock
Alpha Brass
CCI small rifle Magnum Primers
H-4350 Powder
Berger 109s @ .025" jump

Spun this barrel up last weekend and and headed to the range one day after work. Conditions were far from great with an afternoon monsoon storm moving in and giving me some pretty switchy winds. I have a small surplus of H-4350 and decided to start with that. I started at 36 grains and worked up in half grain increments up to 38gr. Used 5 to get a rough zero, cleaned the barrel then started in on load work. Each five shot group was roughly half inch or better. My best group of .398 was at 37.0 grains and gave me a velocity of 2895fps and ES of 6 fps. To say I am pleased with how it shot is an understatement. I didn't see any pressure signs or experience any stiff bolt lift at 38 grains which if I remember correctly was max load in the Hogdon Manual. I love small efficient cartridges and this definitely fits the bill. Incredibly easy to tune even with a bullet that has proven to be a little temperamental to me in the past. I got some more loaded up to stretch it out some and see how it does.

I was hoping that we would hear more about this cartridge and the results of your additional testing.
I'm very interested in the 6 GT. I know most of the guys on this forum are target shooters but I see the 6 GT (for myself) as a great little varmint round for Coyotes, Bobcats, Groundhogs etc. I built one last year with a Brux 9" twist # 4 barrel chopped off at 22" and screwed into a Defiance Deviant action. So far, I've been working with the 70 GR. Nosler BT and the 87 GR VLD. Anyone else interested in this weight class of bullets. I didn't intend to hijack the thread and would really like to hear more about the heavy weight bullets as well...

Glad that Lapua has decided to make 6GT brass, not sure when we will see it here but I like the idea.
I think the 6GT would be an awesome varmint round, especially with the 87 vmax or newer 80 grain ELD-VT. It certainly has the right pedigree to be a great target round as well.
Pictures of a nicely built model Seven would sure be a treat.

I've backordered some Lapua brass and was told autumn, at least in the UK.

I went back to the range with it this past Saturday and results were the same at 100 yards, nice ragged hole groups. I wanted to stretch it out to 600 but I need to put some different inserts in my Burris rings. I only had enough adjustment to get to 400 yards. I am thinking of swapping out scopes completely to something with a bit more power since its shooting so well.

Good looking round. We need pics of the rifle please! You can't just leave us hanging! Lol

Rifle pic for you Paul. Took it back out again yesterday after mounting a 6.5-20 Leupold and shot a couple 5 shot groups at 600. Range was busy so I didn't go down to take pics. Conditions were pretty crappy, first group I had a full value 8-12mph wind from right to left. I put 5 in horizontal line I would guess a little over 3". Second group started the same way and I concentrated more on my wind holds and put the first three under 2" then the wind switched to straight up my back and gave me about 5" of vertical on the last two. Damn wind will ruin everything. I will shoot it again on a calmer day and see how she does.

I've had similar results with the 6GT and 103eldx and 109eldm bullets with Varget. Very easy to load for and a pretty handy round for coyotes and deer.

@STOMP442 What stock is that in the pic? Great looking rifle.

Similar results here.
H4350 with 112 Barnes Match Burner @ 1.8610 BtO

36.3. 2854 FPS 2 SD & 5 ES
36.6 2883 FPS. 4 SD & 9 ES
35.4 2800 FPS. 4 SE & 10 ES

Thank you, it's an HS Precision. Its very comfortable and solid without being too heavy.
