McGowan 26" .223 Barrel

I am considering buying one of these to put on a Savage small shank action. It will be in a B&C Medalist with bottom metal and AICS mags. Looking for opinions on the barrels and how they usually come throated. I would like to run 75-80 gr. bullets in it. 1-8 twist.

Thanks,
Don Dunlap

I sent them an email with similar questions about a 6br Savage pre-fit. They replied in one day and included a chamber print with the specs.

CBI offers 223 match chamber which is longer freebore. You may need 7 twist for some brands of the heavier 75-80gr.

Is that CBI form Jim Briggs? I am shooting a 1-8 26" Benchmark in midrange f class that is throated for them that is treating me pretty good. This rifle will be used for tactical training on steel out to about 800 yards.

Yes as far as I know Jim is the only rep. I have the 26in CBI 8 twist match chamber and shoot up to 75gr A max so far. CBI has a wide following of happy shooters. I've had one McGowan and it shot well too. Good news is Jim usually has a number in stock, but the listings on his site may not be updated.

My .308 FTR rifle has a 30" 1-11 twist CBI I bought from Jim. I have bought many things from Jim over the years, actions, vise jaws, to complete rifles. He is one of the best business men to deal with.

Berger is now recommending a 1-7.5" for their 80VLD's. I am shooting them in a 1-8" mullerworks barrel with a .078 freebore and they are shooting great, .875-1.00 at 300yds and 2.75-3" avg at 500. But I gotta wonder now if a little quicker twist may have helped at 500yds?
