Maybe Old Eyes

I have an older Weaver Nitrex 6-20X made in Japan.

With my old eyes and on 20x the vertical cross hair is blurred, almost looks double, the horizontal is clear. I thought it was me since my son thinks they are fine, however my grandson sees the same thing I do.

Have I failed to adjust it properly?

My guess is that astigmatism is your culprit here. And your grandson may have it also but his eyes are good enough that he doesn't need correction. I have astigmatism and use progressive glasses normally but my shooting glasses are right eye fixed focus at distance plus .75 diopter so my eye at rest focus is 1.33 meters or about 52 inches and it is that way all the way to the upper left corner of the lens that I am looking out of so I have astigmatism correction when using either my match iron sights or my scopes.

BTW I am 68 and now cataracts are adding another layer of issues that are pretty much uncorrectable till I get the operation done. Just not bad enough yet.

Hi Bill,
Guess what, its happens to all of us at one time or another. But AGING brings on a new dimension of reality (physically speaking) which means our eyes do things that we never anticipated as we age. Further, you are talking about a Weaver scope that is so so in clarity compared to say Leupold, Vortex, Nightforce, Schmidt & Bender, March, etc. on the market today. I've been using Weaver T36's for several years now and I hate it when I'm zeroed in and ready to shoot and then suddenly the target starts to bounce and the crosshairs get blurry. Not that Weaver is a bad scope because it's a great scope (for the money).....for younger folks whose body hasn't yet started the decline in various areas, with eyesight being one of those things that are affected which are sometimes caused by other conditions we've contracted over time. And for what it's worth Bill, I just sold one of my Weaver T36 in favor of a Leupold 45X Comp scope so I could see the damn target better at 100 yards. And guess what, clarity is better alright, but that bounce and fuzzy crosshair stuff still comes back now and then. Fact is, at 70+, my eyes aren't what they were when I was 29 yrs old when I could use a Leupold VariXIII 3x10 and drill a target with five shots considerably smaller than the size of a dime. So we can talk about all the causes of poor clarity that won't change the fact that SIMPLY, we are AGING. And you can't hit what you can't see (clearly). SO might I suggest you give that Weaver to your grandson and get yourself a better scope that will better assist you in seeing what you want to hit. Isn't AGING such a wonderful condition?

Alex

P.S. Good luck and hang in their. Others feel your pain as well.
