Need a new scope

Have you had yours eyes checked by an opthamologist? I had a similar situation develop a few years ago and while some scopes/reticles were a bit better none of them gave the clear image I was used to. I went to a opthamologist and he discovered that I was developing a cataract, I had an implant done and the issue was solved. Just a thought for you before you start spending money on scopes.

Same deal for me 2 years ago

Went yesterday. He said I needed to spend more money on a new scope. My eye sight is 20-20 but not as good as it used to be. The price of turning 73 I guess.
Glad to hear that. Mine was not but it is now!!
I was only 52 at the time and they told me that my cataracts came from high dosages of prednisone. That came from getting gout frequently at a very young age and the doctors couldn't figure out why. Also the doctors were determined not to listen to me when I told him the allopurinol did not work. So I got high doses of prednisone to work with the flare-ups. Which 30 years later cause the cataracts that they took care of the other year.

Let me go back on my statement about March's MTR-2. It's
probably the smallest dot of them all. I'll be 72 this year with
eyes of a 20 year old. I love that dot especially when trying to
tag those UBR dots. I could see where some would struggle
using it.
20, really. We thought you have the mind of a 12 yr old. How comes your eyes are so old

Call Sightron, they also have a Veteran program. It's very good. Get a SVED 10x50x60. I have several and love them. Very bright and the dual focus is fantastic.

If you don’t want to go broke, I bought one of these, used it and immediately sold a NF and bought 3 more, to be fair my match rifle stills has a NF on it but my hunting rifle and ground squirrels rifles (.223) have these on them…….if my NF failed I would not hesitate to use this as a replacement

Not to be ignorant but your's must be the best one on the market. Those 2 scopes are in the same class. Some things I like about the GE better some things I like about the S3 better. In the end I HAD two GE's I still have four S3's. You just have to look through them and determine for yourself which one works the best for you.

Maybe I got lucky or my eyes just prefer the GE, I had 8 or 9 S3's over the years on various PCP and CF rifles from 10x42 to the 10-50s and even though they are good I prefer everything on the GEs.

As an eighty year old, I have shot three scopes with which I could see 6mm bullet holes at 600 yards. Those were the NF 15x-55x Competition, the big Valdada Terminator w/ 40mm tube, and the March 10x-60x High Master. Others have been able to see the holes with scopes with cheaper prices, but they did not have my eyesight. Choose a scope for the use to which you plan to use it and your budget. I have settled on the Nightforce Competition because of the weight of the other scopes, not because the Competition has better optics. For my eyes the Valdada has the best glass. but it comes with 52 ounces (with rings) of weight. If you can tolerate this much weight in your competition, the big Valdada is hard to beat.

I am also a big GE supporter , but thought there was something going wrong with one of mine . Just so happens I was due a Eye Doctors appt. , and he said it was time for Cataract surgery on both eyes . Had it done , and strangest thing , My GE is just fine . I'm seventy-four , so check out the eyes before blowing bucks for a flavor of the month scope , you may not really need .

MGYSGT, I'm almost 83, worn glasses forever. I use NF 15-55x52 Comp's for HP F-Class & NF 12-42x56 BR's for 22 lr F-Class, been using them for years. The 15-55's have FCR-1's reticles & the 12-42's have NPR-2's. I tried the 15-55's for SB but some of the targets I shot on were so dark I couldn't see the scoring rings. The thicker NPR-2 on the 12-42s cured that! My teammate, Jim Murphy uses 12-42's for SB also. I don't use dots! Been using NF scopes since they came out with 12-42s many years ago. No problems. Best of luck!

Leupold VX5HD 7-35x56 Firedot reticle is a great option. The reticle dot can be adjusted to whatever size you want. It imposes itself on a target very well.

My current scope just doesn't do it any longer. I am afraid the 25X is not good enough for these 73 year old eyes. At the SWN I couldn't hold off between the lines of the X, 10, 9 etc. Just couldn't make them out clearly like I used to. Thinking Golden Eagle or something like that. Question the SCR is plain cross hair and the ECR is an interrupted T with a dot. Are the cross hairs fine or fat. I prefer the Dot type like I had on my Leupolds, but it can't be too big. What say you? I bought a something to 60X but at 40 and above it was not clear. They are pretty free with saying 60 when it should really be 35 or so.

Tom
Tom,

I just fell down the rimfire benchrest rabbit hole and started looking for a scope. I wanted a fixed power (nothing to fuss with) that would work at 100 yards. I wound up with the March 48X and haven't looked back. I'm no stranger to good glass and the March is very nice. I put a sun shade on it and have been using the modifier disk. i picked the 1/8 dot and with my 69 yo eyes, couldn't imagine anything smaller.
Also, service is outstanding. The sunshield I ordered was a different thread than the objective lens (sunshield was also a March) and when I emailed March, the response I got was from Japan, and after verifying the serial #, a sunshade arrived from Japan along with an unnecessary apology. And they were fast. Now, to find that magic case of ammo :>)
