Max head space?

As long as you realize that you will need custom dies to match the chamber either one can be accurate. I would prefer a minimum chamber, personally, but I don't shoot at long ranges and velocity is a distant second to accuracy. I kill things with my guns as well as punch holes in targets.

SheepDog, I have 64 chamber reamers, I have access to 400+ more. And then there are all of those rifles I did not build, when it comes to fitting a case to a chamber I have threads on my dies and presses, and I have 16 forming dies. When it comes to fitting a case to a chamber I form first then fire. After firing I extract a once fired case. After all of that I find I must borrow, rent or purchase a reamer to finish my last two projects.

I have access to all the chamber reamers on the planet. All it takes is money.
Are you proud of all those rifles that you did not build? I bet I have not built more rifles than you.

Isn't the case matched to your chamber after the first shot???

Doesn't the case need to be/don't most reasonable shooters want it to be "matched to the chamber" to begin with???? BEFORE the first shot????? I am thinking that .008" excess chamber length {closing on a field gauge} is not where I want my rifles to be and certainly positively not where I want the chambers I cut to be. A few thousandths, maybe no big deal, but still doesn't have to be that way. If there is a SAAMI or any other minimum chamber length, why not get it nailed down and right??? And then why not match the brass to it??? I mean, we are talking precision shooting here.

Seems ridiculous for a gunsmith to dial in the bore of the barrel to 0.0005 or less runout and then miss the saami headspace mark by more than a thousandth or two. I can only think a dangerous game hunting gun would have any use for such a loose chamber that will fire any ammo for it ever made.

You must have a lot of dies if you have 16 per reamer.

hammerjack,

I would be finished if you could read and comprehend, and now I will try to type slower; I have 16 forming dies, I did not say I had 16 forming dies for each reamer.
