I have a question about "belted" cases. Was the cartridge designed to head space on the belt or was the belt put on to strengthen the case head so you could load to higher pressure?

When we shot 1000yd competition with the 30-338 wildcat, we resized the cases to headspace on the shoulder for best accuracy.

The belt first appeared on 300 H&H and 375H&H to headspace on. Those cases have too steep a slope on the shoulder.
Now after that came the belted magnum craze which was created by the same ad men that are giving you the 6.5 Creedmoor. So if you didn’t have a belt you didn’t have a rifle. But man some great cartridges were made. Might want to check the ballistics on a 257 Weatherby, a 264 Winchester,
7mmMag, 300 WinMag,. They haven’t come up with anything new and I don’t care if my cartridge has an archaic belt. Just read an article (MSNBC!) telling the greatness of a 338 Lapua as the very best sniper cartridge due to unheard of super ballistics.
Try reading those of a 340 Weatherby.
The only thing that’s new and great is the advertising and a way more gullible public.

After the first or second ( on the 30-378 probably the first) that’s where the cartridge headspace’s.
You headspace all the time on the belt the case will separate right after the belt because it is always stretching. Accuracy? That’s not the reason to headspace a belted case on the shoulder. It’s because that’s where you do it.
