Mauser Argentine (98) rear scope mount base

Posting this for a friend. He's building a sporter off a 1909 Argentine action, basically a large-ring M98 Mauser, drilled and tapped (2 holes on each bridge) for 2-piece scope bases. He needs a scope base for the rear bridge - he has the front one, but not a proper one for the rear. He wrote an email to Leupold's custom shop but as yet no answer. He would love to have a "dual dovetail" set of bases, but the std style with the rear being the one with the big "windage" screws that hold the ring to the base would work as well.

PS He narrowed to a couple of Leupold part numbers, but he's not really sure exactly what style the bases are (50056 and 50026).

Anyone know this application, a good source for this rear base, or have other suggestions?

I use Talleys and custom ones. I can't help you other than that.

I have an M98 with a set of the red field windage bases SR the two piece ones. Not sure if I can get a number off it for you but I’ll look I am in the process of converting it to accept Talley’s I’d get them now to start with like butch says—shoot a PM to Ggmac he’s the Mauser expert on here.

Did he remove the charger guides ? No one makes a 2 piece that fits with the guides on , at least no one I know of . The Redfield , leupold , Burris , etc have em in the shop , I'll check tomorrow .
They come in sets , so if the rear is wrong , the front MAY be wrong ( height ) even if it fits .
What about the rear isn't correct ? Don't tell me it's the charger guides !

Leupold makes scope base sets that don't have to have the charger hump removed as does Warne. Those are the 2 I can think of, might be some others I am unaware of. Regardless, they come in sets, the front and the rear in one package. I may have a Leupold rear base for the '98 in my stuff. You need to know what the hole spacing is. I seem to remember using the front one on a M1917 and making one for the rear bridge at one time in the distant past. The 1909 is a good one to have re-case hardened before using it for a 'custom'. Some can be a bit on the 'soft' side.

I used the warne on my 98. did not have to grind off hump Gunsmith said they worked great and he would use again. I have no complaints on my end.

Good to know , it's been awhile since I used 2 piece bases .
Thanks
Ditto the rehardening , they are prone to lug set back . If it's very hard to lift the bolt on a empty chamber after being fired , it's probably too late .
Been searching , seems midway is out but they have weaver grand slam (Redfield style ) in stock . I can see now how they do it . They raise the base height a little and cantilever (?) the adjustment screws over the guide .

Yes he removed the charger guide (or is was already removed.)

He doesn't have any rear base for it.

Thanks.

Thanks, fellas, he's been reading the thread and has ordered Leupold bases. If that doesn't pay off, your other tips will be processed. He's also now aware of the hardess issue, doesn't intend to push pressure, but will monitor.

Since its been ground , you may need shims to keep on the same plane as the front . It all depends on how it was contoured . Shims are easy to get or make , I use a few different lengths of 1" solid round tool stock mounted in rings to check for correct height . Or it could be set up on the mill if you have one .
Good luck

"Monitoring", and it'll be too late. Once they start setting back, that's pretty much it with a Mauser. I won't hardly build on a DWM '98 without having it re-case hardened to begin with.

Let me put it this way, the reputable gunsmith who did the finish ream on the chamber test fired the rifle with moderate 6.5x55 Swede loads with no apparent issue. So going forward "monitor" seems apropos and not unreasonable.
