Mauser 98 guys help

I have a mauser 98 in 22-250 & getting what seems like a clicker almost at the end of ejection after firing. Not a clicker. I'm well below chamber size. I'm getting the same kind of click on sized brass on bolt closure at the same spot. I have taken the claw extractor off & buffed it. It seems to be within tolerances. I am seeing small gouge marks on the edge of the rim. I have included pics as good as I can take them. On case I painted a black marker on the rim, the other just plain. I'm at a loss here. This is Lapua brass, but it does it on Winchester also.

Ejection happens when the bolt is almost at the end of it's travel. Are you feeding from the magazine or inserting a cartridge into the chamber and then closing the bolt?

Mausers must be fed from the magazine or extractor damage can result. Also if your mag doesn't have a rear spacer and short follower you will most likely experience feeding problems.

Edit to add:

Insert a loaded round into the bolt while holding the bolt in your hand with bolt removed from the rifle. Make sure you have clipped the cartridge under the extractor, You should be able to hold the bolt in any position and not have the cartridge fall out of the bolt. You should get 0.006 to 0.008 deflection of the extractor when you insert the cartridge. This can be checked by placing the bolt in a mill vice with an indicator touching the extractor and zeroed, Then insert the brass and note how many thous of deflection you have.

I am inserting one at a time. I can check if bolt holds cartridge, but I do not have a mill vice. I'd have to take it to someone. Just can't figure out what is biting into the rim edge. Thanks for your help.

Just tried cartridge in bolt with a loaded round. It holds the cartridge but wobbles around as I turn the bolt.

If you are not inserting into the magazine and letting the bolt pick it up, That may have been your problem to start with. Most people who get a Mauser and don't understand how they work, Try running them like a Remington and they don't work that way. If you are inserting the round into the chamber and then trying to close the bolt, The extractor has to be forced over the rim and may have been damaged.

The biting into the rim is happening when you force the extractor over the cartridge rim.

Put up a pic of the mag box and the face of the extractor.

Will do. This all makes sense now. I'll post a pic soon.

Your extractor has been modified badly; the edge that engages the rim has been chamfered to allow single feeding, but it looks as though it was overdone. The edge of the extractor should not be sharp - that's what is chewing up the rims; that edge should be rounded. It has been shortened so much that it probably isn't fully engaging the rim; the reduced engagement helps that edge chew up the brass. . I'd suggest starting with a new extractor and shaping it properly.

Yes, It looks like the extractor has been damaged from forcing it over the rim. Buy another one on Ebay or Numrich.

Then have someone fit it for you.

Also, The mag box should have a spacer in the rear and a short follower, Without doing that it may never feed right. Is this a commercial Mauser? Another words, What brand is it? Or what country's military made it?

If it's commercial, It may have been set up for short cartridges, But usually they have a spacer in the rear of the mag box from the factory if it was sold that way. Numrich used to sell a kit with a spacer etc, I don't know if they still do or not.

Thank you. I'll look for a new one & feed through the magazine instead. I'm not going to try & shape a new extractor.

I can’t add much. I just did a nice Mauser Project, and a fellow poster sent me several extractors to play with. I did, and finally decided to feed it from the magazine the way it was designed to do.
Do you have a spare extractor you want to sell? I'll feed from the magazine from now on.
I can't find any. All sold out.

The one on eBay is pretty expensive IMO. Says new though.

They were around and more readily available not long ago. I would grab one of these if I were you. Best to know which ‘98 action you have though.

I have 22-250 which is the large ring, correct? The extractor measures 4.25 inches in length.

I bought this rifle off a friend of mine who was up in years & could't hunt anymore. It was the 1st mauser 98 I ever had, so I didn't know that it was supposed to be fed via magazine. Nor did I know the extractor had been shaped for inserting case via hand & was shaped poorly. The rifle was shooting clover leafs at 100. Going to get a stock extractor & feed via mag. Thanks for all the replies. I surely appreciate it.
