Mauser 98 barrel change gunsmith

Hi everyone,
I new to this forum, but have a few friends that are members and they always seem to get good help from you guys. So here's my problem. I have a custom made mauser 98 in 22-250rem. It's in a nice varmint stock that my great uncle made a long time ago. The barrel is also a heavy varmint contour. last year I had problems hitting a ground hog just under 500yds. So I took it to the range and it wasn't grouping well at100yds. Long story short... My RCBS Precision Mic could not find where the rifling started. New barrel needed, right??

So I've been looking into changing the barrel out my self, but I'm thinking it would be cheaper having a good gunsmith do it. What do you guys think? And do any of you know of a good smith in the eastern pennsylvania area that would be up for the task? Thanks.

Howdy !

I highly recommend James Peightal, of Ernest, PA.

His work has often been mentioned in Precision Shooting
Magazine.

Peightal does great work, fast turn times, charges reasonable fees; and produces superbly accurate rifles.

Peightal is located more Westward in PA than East, but would be worth the shipping and/or drive.

IT&D in Ohio does really good work for a reasonable price with fairly quick turnarounds. www.itdcustomgun.com is their site.

I would definatly recomend having a gunsmith instaland chamber a barrel from a reputable maker. I.E. kreiger, bartlein, shilen. I have installed barrels in the past that were pre chambered/ pre-fitted and was less than happy with the results. You will have $400 + in it when done but I beleive you will be much happier.

P.S. you might even consider going with a larger caliber to help buck the wind better on those longish shots, say 6mm bench rest

Thanks for the info guys. So it sounds like I'll be shipping my action and barrel out. No big deal, I was just looking for an easier way out. I know, easier isn't always better. As far as going to a 6mm cartridge, is there something that I could use all my 22-250 brass with? I have a lot of 22-250 brass! 6mm-250???

Ok so I don't want to start a war but... Why is the 6mm BR better than the 22-250 at bucking wind? I took a 22cal 55gr blitzking @3700fps and a 6mm 80gr Blitz SBT @2950fps (sierra manual) and plugged it into my Infinity Software and the 22-250 bucks a 10mph crosswind better than the 6mm untill 950yds, and It flys a lot flatter the whole way too... sorry in advance

Nothing to start a war about. The 6mms would probably give you better barrel life for the same wind drift. You could play some games with your software and look at some of Berger's 6mm Hunting and Varmint bullets to see what might give you the same drift as your 22/250. The 6mm/250 is en excellent round. Fred Szablewski, the owner of Sabreco, Inc. in Skippack, PA (610-584-8228) is an expert with the 6mm/250. I know 2 shooters who have had excellent results with it in 600 yards prone shooting, but there are few catridges that will beat a 6mmBR for accuracy out to 600 yards. And barrel life with the 6BR is probably the best of the alternative you have mentioned. That is probably why it was suggested.

No doubt that the barrel could be less than satisfactory BUT the mausers have extremely slow lock time that doesn't contribute to accuracy. You can replace the "stock" ?? firing pin spring & gain a little. Also, you can install a speed lok cocking piece that shortens the firing pin travel by about a third. There are quite a few tricks that you can do but the bottom line is that it'll never have a lock time like a 700 so you really need your form to be better to be as good. Might sound screwed up but I do a lot of mauser actions. You can PM me any questions if you wish.

I will have to keep looking into these 6mm bullets. I'm always up for something new. As far as my action goes Larry, I have no Idea what it has done to it. It was passed down to me from my uncle, that had it passed down to him from his uncle, who built the thing. It has a pretty nice Timney Trigger in it.... thats all I know!

I started a project much the same as you. I bought a mauser 98 action about five months ago...just to build into a F-class rifle, most have told me it is old and outdated. I put a heavier firing pin spring and a aftermarket firing pin into the bolt and wowza I've been shooting groups in the range of .1 to .06 inside to inside diameter (on perfect days) at 100yrds. My average groups at 600yrds are in the 4 inch range (which I believe is more a factor of my rest not being that good than it is the gun) As far as the 22-250 problem goes if you want to use it for match shooting just put a faster twist barrel like a 1 in 9 on the action and shoot the heavier bullets. A heavy bullet shooting 22-250 has been used at 1000yrds by some great F-Class shooters, it might be a little harder on the barrel than some but with the modern powders it isn't nearly as bad as it used to be.

I forgot to add that IT&D did the work (threading, chambering, crowning, and fitting) on a Bartlein barrel I sent them. IT&D also offers douglas barrels, which my father just had them put on a Mauser 98 build.
