Mauser 1895 : add rear sight?

Just for a fun project, I bought a Spanish Model 1895 carbine that had been cut down. The seller had intended to put a scout scope on it, but did not get around to doing that. The military stock has been cut-down. There is no rear sight, but only the small tapped hole in the top of the bbl., where the sight had been.

I was able to shoot a target at 50 yards and the bore appears to be very good.

Question: What rear sight can I find to put on the rifle that will not cost an arm and leg? Secondly, is there a no-tap mount made for that model, to mount a scope?

Thanks,
Steven

Yes a funky no tap is / was available . I'll have to dig out the manufacturer . The hole one the top of the barrel usually isn't tapped it's just a detent for the original sight that was soldered and screw for detent .
The best solution is a Williams receiver sight .
Is your bolt handle bent ?

Steve I just checked , quickly , it's no longer being made . Sorry . If I can find my old shop inventory I will sell one . If I can find it ! I'm not real organized . I think S&K no drill scope mount was the brand . I've not checked Brownells , they may still carry it .
If it's not available and I can't find it you will need to have it drilled and tapped by a smith , usually $30 - $40 PER hole , 3 holes one a one piece 4 on 2 piece bases PLUS have your bolt bent to clear a scope .
It gets expensive fast , even the older no drill mount was about $75 . It's so old it was made here in the good ole US .

Thank you Ggmac for that info. This is just another rifle to play with at the range. I will go with the William receiver sight and just shoot this one like it is for awhile.

I just bought, from an acquaintance, an Israeli Mauser with the Israeli crest, but still bearing the Third Reich markings! Still in 8x57mm Mauser, so likely an early one into Israel. No import marks anywhere!

I will get to the range with the Israeli and the Spaniard, as soon as I put a rear sight on M1895 Spanish Mauser in 7x57mm

Best, Steven

Steven , I had time to do more research , it seems Brownells still lists the S&K no drill scope mount . It's part # is 794-000-006ak it's listed at $120
This is from an older print catalog .
The Redfield receiver sight will still need 2 holes drilled and tapped .
Hope this helps , I'll still look for my old inventory . It was cheaper 20-30 yrs ago !

Hey Steve: I have a thing for old Mausers, too. You should try to find a Swedish Husquevarna carbine in 6.5x55. I bought one, scoped it and it shoots great. Here's the first load work up at 100 with Hornady 120s and Hv100.

Wow! Josh, that Swede is grouping very well. I still hold an 01FFL, so when the Swedes were coming in at $59 each, I bought and sold a bunch of them. I never got one that would not shoot well with the right ammo. The last one that I had was sporterized and when I was at the range, a man offered me too much for it, so it is gone. A lot of shooters here know that I deal, so they always want to look at what I am shooting.

Just this morning, I was shooting a Mauser that I got in a swap yesterday. It is a WWII K98k by FN. It still has some Waffenampt markings, along with the Israeli crest. There is no import marks on it. It was not converted to 7.62x51mm and is still in 8x57mm. I took some Remington Core-Lokt in 170gr and some Privi Partizan in 196gr. The old Mauser really liked the 196gr. heavier bullets and grouped right at 1" at 50 yards. Now that I have an idea what to hand load, I will go back next week and shoot it at 100 yards. Let me know when you get the load that shoots best.

Wow! That cheap. I paid $450 for mine. I don't care. It shoots. I was lucky to be at my LGS when they turned down an "old Mauser" a guy had. He said his Uncle brought it home from the war in his duffle bag. I followed him outside and offered him $400, which he accepted. It's a K98 war bring back, unmolested. Some light rust spots on the outside from sitting in a closet for 60+ years but the bore is bright and shiny. It has all the right stamps on it. I keep it oiled and don't shoot it. I felt lucky to get it.
