Marking new brass?

Link

Silver $$ Contributor
What is the best way to mark brass when starting on a new batch, to keep them separate from old?

What do you do?

thanks again

When I am forced to mix up my brass I mark one set with a magic marker. Several stripes on the body of the case. I also do that if I have a few pieces brass that maybe got the shoulder set back a bit farther than all the rest. By marking them I know to use them as foulers or sighters and not shoot them on the record target.

I get a needle file and put a very small nick on the rim,ie running the file at 45deg to the edge of the rim area). This provides a very small mark that does not affect their functioning in the rifle or the symmetry of the case overall.

I have 3 batches in some calibers where I have I II or III marks to discern. THat way, I can throw them in the tumbler together and not worry about any marks rubbing off.

Another one for marking the case head using a small jewelers needle file: just a very small 'V' cut on the edge of the rim, at the same location for each batch of 20 cases. 20 over the 'L' from Lapua, next 20 over the 'A', etc.

I have heard of some folks using a spring loaded punch and placing on '.' on the casehead every time it is fired.

As for me, I segregate them in plastic ammo boxes and use a label maker to mark the boxes.
