Marking cases, reload count

Ok, this may be a dumb and simple question but I'll ask it anyway.

What do you guys do, if anything, to keep track of how many times a case has been fired?

I know keeping a mental count and in separate boxes helps but I was wondering if any of you do any kind of additional marking to keep track and especially if you are using something like no turn old Lapua and the new stuff in the same gun.

I just keep track of the number of times fired on the targets that were shot...
Also I keep track of the primers fired, as I set aside a particular lot of them just for that one rifle...

I make up a simple label for each box of ammo, usually the 20 round slip tops. The label says, (as an example) 33 x Varget x 107 SMK x touch x 1.769" x BR4 x Lapua 4x. The next time that box of 20 is loaded, the "Lapua 4x" will jump to "Lapua 5x". The cartridge ident is on a seperate/permanent label on the end of the box, so it's easy to see when stacked in the cabinet. This one would say 6BRX.

This works great for me. I use this to keep all brass that has been weight sort, and I keep up with the number of times fired.

I get a lot of these trays. A friend of mine who is a Swat team instructor for one of the local cities near by brings these to me when they do thier traning. The tray's are from 40cal S&W. All .308 head size cases will fit perfectly into the tray's.

Edit: the two slash marks means 2Xs fired. I just use roman numerals to keep up with that.

i load by boxes of 100 and put infor inside top of lid.... cal., bullet, grain, brass mfg, col, powder mfg and type, grain, primer and finally number of reloads....i keep all the fired brass from that box in with the ready to shoot until they are all ready to reload....they stay on that box until the last one is discarded and then it gets 100 new brass to start all over again......with ackley improved i get so many more reloads that it has been a long time since i bought new brass..... :D :D i have a couple hundred new 300 savage that are waiting in the wings in plastic bags.....
one of my grandsons shoots that and he doesn't get to shoot as much as he would like to.... is a better than just good mechanic (not just a parts replacer) and is married with two daughters and another on the way...

I guess I need to be a little more organized and keep everything separated and labeled.

I was looking for something I could do to the case itself buy I guess that wouldn't work.

If you're talking about permanetly marking the case, yes, I've done that also. I use a small jewelers V-cut file and make a very small "V" cut on the outside edge of the rim. With all the headstamp information on the case head it's easy to make all the cuts at the "L" (Lapua, for example) for one batch, at the "A" for another, etc.

I just place my ammo label on top of each ammo box, and keep them rotated like that. I tape it down completely EXCEPT where I can add a ticky mark each time I reload it. I just keep rotating the ammo in each box so that if I have a box of 50, and only shoot 20 rounds that day (assuming i reload them when I get home), I end up with a box that has 30 loaded 10 times, and a box of 20 loaded 11 times. When I go shooting the next time, I always get the box that has the 10 on it before I get the box loaded 11 times. This always has worked for me for all calibers. Of course I use either different color ammo boxes or mark the name of the gun on the label to keep the brass separated from gun to gun.
