making a 22br out of a rem 788

i am sure this has been asked but i am a big fan of 788's and have been doing a lil reading on the22br i have a rem 788 in 6mm, 22-250 and 308 but i recently came in to a 22 cal. hart barrel SS 1 in 9 its just a blank is it possable to make a 22br out of any of my 788 actions any help would be greatly apprecated
thanks andrew

It's been done more than once with a 788 ..... no reason it can't be done again..
EDIT-
I noticed the 22 barrel, and wondered what that has to do with making a 6br ??
You could make a really nice 22BR out of it for one of your 788's... and it will shoot better than your 22/250 ever did......

I converted my 22-250 M788 to a 6BR without any problems. What kind info are you looking for? I barreled mine with a 1 in 10' sporter weight barrel for shooting lighter varmint bullets. The rounds seem to function through the magazine fine although I haven't done it much because I single feed most of the time.

I'm missing something. How do you take a Hart 22 cal barrel and chamber to 6 BR fitted to a 788??

the only way I can even see that remotely working is to send it off, have id r bored and rerifle, stress relieved and reamed for the 6br. And it still won't be as good as getting a dedicated 6mm cal barrel and have it reamed for the 6br. You could build a 22br, 222, 223, 22-250.

I've had a few good barrels rebored and they have shot as good as ever.
I sure wouldn't spend the money on a Hart in 22 caliber to have it rebored being it's new and could be sold to help out with a brand new Pac-Nor barrel in 6mm....

o ok well i must have miss understood the info i was reading i thought that it used a 6 mm case but used a 22 cal brl, so if a guy wanted to make a pretty good shooting rifle with that barrel what would u guys suggest? for p dogs and paper any ideas would be apprecated thanks andrew

You could just build a 22BR . It is a very good case and with a 14 twist will shoot the 52 gr bullets at 22/250 Velocity
It's easy to load for and the dies are available on commercial basis. My friend bob built one from my advise and love it.. It is highly accurate.

A 22-250 or 22-250AI shoots flat enough but both will start to heat up after only about ten shoots and therefore it would be my last choice in a decent prairie dog town.

If you decide to sell your .224 Hart barrel I'm looking for one to build a 22br.

Just use it to build a ultra accurate 22br, you'll never regret the choice....
You'll still need 6mm BR brass that needs to be necked down to 22 caliber..
Still the best choice in a 22 caliber.......

ok so would i be able to use that savage 223 action im not lookin at gettin to fance or anything or what would you suggest

ok, now I'm confused. Your last post ask if you can use the Savaage .223. Do you want to build a rifle with one of your 788's, or on a Savage? It could be done with your 788's, any of the 3 cartridges you list has the right boltface. If you have a Savage in .223, it doesn't have the correct boltface.

well yea i havehad lots of comments back to the 788 part would it be better to use the 6 mm action or the 308 thow?

My turn to try...

1st .22 cal blank onto a rem788 and rebored to a 6mm for a 6br...WOW that is definitely a the long way around. If you want a 6br and you have a rem788 with a boltface for a 308/243/22-250/ 30-06 then sell the blank and buy another in 6mm and have it chambered in 6mmBR. OOOORRR thread and chamber it for 22br. Same brass just run through a sizing die for the 22br. If you are nor talking Savage and a 223 boltface yuou will need a new boltface for the 308 type head diameter and a barrel for 6br. Some of the vendors on www.savageshooters.com sell 6br barrels.

i believe everyone was getting off track. you were wanting to re-barrel your 788 to 22br right? the 22-250 and the 308 should have the right boltface for the swap barrel to your hart blank. just find a competent gunsmith and get that barrel put on your 788 action.

As a fellow 788 nutcase: YES, you can rebarrel a 22-250, .243, 6mm Rem, 7-08 or .308 788 to make a 22BR. Personally, I'd go with the 22-250 as they USUALLY have a shorter action, although later production models did not). Your 6mm Rem 788 is a semi-collector's item so hold onto it as-is.

I've done a similar project and all is well. You might have trouble convincing your local gunsmith that it's OK for him to work on something other than a Remington 700. Plan on shooting the rifle as a single shot, however. The magazines, aka: clips) are a pain to modify for the shorter cartridge.
