MAKING 6PPC FROM LAPUA

When making 6PPC brass from 220 Russian Lapua brass, how many thousands will I have to neck turn off to make it fit a .262" chamber ? Right now the 220 Lapua brass measures .015" before expanding. What will the thickness be after expanding ? I know I need to get to .0085" for that chamber. How many passes will it take to get to that measurement of .0085" ?

Well doing it that way you will have a .260 loaded round. I know there’s guys that would do that in one pass I wouldn’t I would do it in two. I own a 6ppc but been years since I’ve loaded for it but Dusty Stevens or Boyd Allen could answer all your ppc questions.

I run a 262 neck and my bullets like it in the lands so I FF at my seating depth I load at. My necks are cut to .0082. There is a video series on Youtube by Jack Neary that you may find beneficial. The 6ppc & SR-BR in many ways is it's own "Animal" compared to is longer range cousins. Happy Shooting...

So there you have it. From around .0082 to .0086. What amount is better depends on who you are talking to. Probably more important to be consistent.
One pass or two? I think that depends in part in what you are turning with. You can do one pass to get you to minimum.0086, fire and then do a final pass down to .0082-5 to clean up the brass.
Don’t be afraid to experiment. I have mistakenly turned pieces down to .0079–.0081. Did not see any ill effects.

I have a .262 Chamber and have two neck turners set up to take off what was needed in two passes.upload_2020-5-8_11-23-7.jpeg

Two passes for me with a 262 neck.

JMO, but running your neck walls at .0087 is a little on the tight side. No need to be that tight. I’d measure the bullets at the pressure ring and let the bullet diameter dictate neck wall thickness striving for a couple thousandths clearance. I wouldn’t run tighter than that, especially if you are new to neck turning.

Whatever you decide for a neck wall thickness, please load up a dummy round and measure the OD of the neck with a micrometer before proceeding.

FWIW, Jack Neary says make the wall thickness .0081 or .0082 for a 262 neck.

I strongly recommend that you listen to the Neary video series. They helped me out a lots as a beginner.

You might also want to read Boyer's book. It has a very good section on neck turning and also what to look for as far as the carbon ring on a fired case.
