Make or Sell a Type of Roll Crimp Die

Good day,

I'm looking for a type of roll crimp die, without the drama of my post in the reloading section.

I'm hoping one of the vendors such as PBKING, PMA or such would have a die with a roll crimp on the low end (closest to shell holder) and wide body opening which would accept a variety of cartridges in one caliber with reasonably different neck thicknesses. Adjustment of the amount of crimp by careful setting of the die. No need for it to do shoulder bump, body sizing or neck sizing, just a roll crimp.

Looking for information from someone who has played with such a thing or can make some in different calibers. I'll ignore and not respond to any messages not related to my request.

Thanks again,

Good day,

I don't have a lathe, otherwise I'd make what I'm looking for myself. As a proof of concept for .308, consider taking a threaded die blank, boring an 0.550" flat top hole through the center for 1/2", then a 0.334" or so hole for 0.25" in the center, and finish with a 0.309 hole through the center of the blank. You might want to taper the 0.334" hole from 0.338" to 0.326" for neck turned cases.

Test it for function on .308, 30-06 and 300 WM cases. Similar appropriate dimensions for .243, 6.5 etc. If you want to get fancy, double ended die with a caliber on each end.

Thanks for the consideration,

The problem with universal in this case may be that pressure applied to case mouth will transfer down. Bulged necks or shoulder setback, even pushing out to larger dia at shoulder. Most good dies fully support the case all the way up I think. I've had 325 wsm brass swell like that just seating bullets in new fresh brass because of neck tension.

wv,

I've considered that, however, case necks aren't supported or gripped by a standard die. I believe most factory crimps are provided by moving parts, similar to how primers are crimped. If you provide an angle from the larger diameter to the smaller diameter, a portion of the downward force is directed to moving the brass mouth sideways.

Thanks,

It boils down to proper die adjustment.
It's no different than adjusting for roll crimping in pistols like 357, 44 etc. or straight wall cartridges like 30-30, 45-70 etc.
If you can set shoulder bump, roll crimping is no problem.

Good day,

So who will make me a die? I'll pay for it, more than it costs just to see why it hasn't been done before. Send a PM if you don't wish to respond publicly.

Thanks,
DocBII
